No Bonine/Meclizine for kids?

I noticed there seems to be some controversy over whether to give Bonine (meclizine) to kids for motion sickness. Does anyone know why it might not be OK? I called both my pediatrician's office and my local pharmacist and both said it would be fine to give DS8 half a tablet. Just wondered if anyone had been given a reason for the opposing view.

Thanks! :)

The pharmacist I spoke with advised against it because it was "not approved for use in children under 12". Didn't push the issue as my kids have never had motion sickness. Suppose it's a FDA thing.

It's not really a controversy. As an over-the-counter medication, meclizine (Bonine Tablets and and Dramamine Less Drowsy Formula Tablets) is only for ages 12 and over.

But if your physician approved the use of meclizine for your child, I would go with the physician's advice.

I asked my doctor and my daughters' pediatrician. Both said it was okay to give Bonine to our daughters (10 and 12 at the time). But to anyone reading this posting, don't take their word for it; check with your child's own doctor.

By the way, the Bonine worked -- but they were very tired by the evening. Next time, I think we'll try half a tablet instead of a full tablet, and we'll give it before bed instead of in the morning.

If your child isn't normally bothered by motion sickness, I'm wondering whether I should bother to even give him ANY... I don't think I will unless he has a problem.

Ennazus, I totally agree.

Unless a child is VERY prone to motion sickness there is no need to give him/her anything at all. The only time I ever give my daughter Dramamine (and her ped has also said NO to Bonine, it is not for kids under 12) is if we are on a small boat excursion with lots of potential for rocking. Even then I'm not sure she needs it but better safe than sorry. :)

Listen to your own doctor, mine said no, especially since Dramamine works and IS approved for children, but every doc is different.

Enjoy your cruise! :)

I totally agree... every doctor is different. I feel comfortable with what my pediatrician says as she is very well known in the area and has two young children herself. She has always given me sound advice. However, I always like to be sure as no doctor is right 100% of the time. Since the pharmacist looked up meclizine and said it was fine for an 8 y.o. also, I am doubting it is dangerous. I know a lot of times OTC meds are not approved for under 12 simply because no study has been specifically done to allow them to label the product that way. If I was a drug company (or a doctor for that matter) I would be careful what I said in this litigious society!

My son IS very prone to motion sickness, and although I don't medicate my kids or myself unless I feel it is really needed, I want to be prepared. It is no fun to feel nauseated on vacation. I used to do a lot of SCUBA diving and Bonine was what I found worked the best for me and caused me the least side effects, so that would be my drug of choice if he needs it. Just wanted to see what others had heard.

You might try the Sea Band. It looks like an elastic pony tail holder with a round disc on it. You wear it on the wrist. My mil used them on her last vacation and they worked great. She takes many medications and was afraid of how Dramimine would affect them.

I've been debating this in my mind. I'm going to call my pediatrician right now to see what he says. My children are not prone to motion sickness, but I thought I might have it on hand just in case. Although from what I've read, if you don't take it before the trip, you're out of luck. Is this really true?

Gosh, no, it just works better. A lot of people recommend trying it out before the trip to see how it affects you. I get soooo sleepy with any of these that I know I have to basically quarter the pills or else I would snooze away the whole vacation. Better to know these things ahead of time.

Our pediatrician said "absolutely not" to meclizine. We packed the "less drowsy" Dramamine for DS and the meclizine for us, but none of us had to use any of it (and DW is quite prone to motion sickness).

Dramamine Less Drowsy Formula is meclizine. If you packed it for DS and meclizine for yourselves, you packed the same medication twice.

Dramamine Original Formula is not meclizine. It's labeled as approved for children. But it makes my children fall asleep.

Sorry....... meant to say we packed the "less drowsy" for us and the regular Dramamine for DS.

We also took a Sea Band for DS, but he didn't use that either.

I know when I went to talk to my 3yr old dd doct. she advised against it b/c it wasn't FDA approved for those under 12. She told me to take some Benydral with just in case and I never had to use it.

- The age recommendation for medication often has to do with how a medication is removed from the body, i.e. through the liver or kidneys. And a person/child's age a medication is recommended for often has to do with whether those organs are developed enough to handle the medication or not too "worn out" (as in the elderly). A child's organs are not fully developed and are still growing. It may be that a child under that age of 12 doesn't not have a developed-enough liver or kidney to break-down this drug and remove it from the body. Which could be a big problem and could have serious side-effects and consequences. I am a nurse and I see the effects of a person's body not being able to excrete a drug all the time (My patient population is mostly elderly & I mostly see this with narcotics). I don't know a lot about meclizine (the active ingredient in Bonine & Less-Drowsy Dramamine) but I do know that it works great for MY motion-sickness, that physicians often prescribe it for vertigo/dizziness (even when not caused from traveling) and that the box says do NOT give to a child under the age of 12. There must be a reason the box says this. Regular Dramamine works just fine in kids and is safer. If you are worried about your kids having motion sickness, pack regualr Dramamine just in case. If they don't have a problem, then you won't need to give it but you will have been prepared. Also, I seem to remember reading that DCL has both bonine and dramamine available free to passengers (don't know personally, my 1st time cruising). So if you are worried about the cost of buying a drug and then never using it, you can always not pack it and get some from DCL if you need it. I realize that dramamine causes drowsiness, but so does meclizine, just not as bad. You can always try giving less dramamine to see if it causes less drowsiness but still takes care of the motion sickness. I give dramamine to my kids and I give them each a different dose. I give the 8 year old 1/2 tab and my 12 year old 2 tabs. The 8 year old is tiny and doesn't weigh very much and the 12 year old is big and weighs as much as most adults. One time I gave the 12 year old only 1 tab and it wasn't enough and she had really bad motion sickness until I gave her the 2nd tab and it kicked in. (I could probably give the 12 year old the meclizine just haven't needed to yet) They do get a little drowsy but if they are busy and kept active they still function and have a great time. It is when they sit still that they start getting really drowsy. And of course you could always look into other medication/treatment for motion-sickness that would be safe for kids under 12. This is an area I know nothing about because meclizine and dramamine have always worked great for our family.

Wow!! Holy cow!! I just read back over this and realized I wrote a book!!:D Probably gave you more information than you needed or stuff you already knew or information you weren't even asking for!!:D Oh well, I typed it, I'm not going to erase it. I at least hope I was helpful.

I thought I heard that when it's avail free on the ship it's when everybody needs it so there are long lines to get into the ship's doctor - personally I wouldnt want to wait that long

I have the Sea Bands from when I cruised in Dec - never needed them but felt better having them along. I also had a prescript from the doc just in case - also never needed it. For DS10 Im planning on buying more Sea Bands to have just in case. I called his doc yesterday and they suggested Benadryl. I'll take it but only to be used if absolutely necessary. The stuff knocks the kid out.

I've cruised 3 times now (2x on DCL) and every time I have had the same experience. The first night around dinner time, I start to feel the rocking (I've been told it's because of crossing the Gulf Stream) but by about an hour later it's over. I've never felt the motion other than that dinner time hour on the first night. We've never needed anything for sea sickness.
This year we traveled with a friends son who is very susceptible to motion and he felt it (much worse than the rest of us) but only for that hour or so and then it was over for him as well and he never had a problem.

Hope for the best!

Heidica, I LOVE your info! Thank you very much for taking the time to post it. It provides a very good reason why I might not want to give it to him, even though it was cleared through my doc/pharmacist.

His car sickness does seem to be getting better lately, and from reading other people's posts it seems that he may very well not need anything. I guess I will pack some "sea bands" and some regular Dramamine or Benadryl (usually have that with me anyway) just for my peace of mind.

Thanks again!
Melissa :)
