My hubby got me a new bird feeder two weeks ago. He put a feed mix in it and some suet on the side (it has a suet holder.) The birds don't seem to be coming. Anyone have ideas about how to attract them? I live in the snow ridden part of PA.

Try throwing some seed in a wide area around the area where the feeder is. Also, if the seed is thistle seed (for finches) it can easily be rancid, and they will ignore it. Seems thistle does that pretty easily with high oil content. Other seeds seem very stable. Try the spreading of the seed for a bit to get their attention. May work.

If you haven't ever fed the birds, they will catch on eventually. I found that if I started in the winter (when I lived where there was winter), they didn't come untill spring. A lot of them were at WDW apparently. But once a few found the food, they told all their friends and relatives.

It's also good if you put the feeder by some bushes, so the birds have some type of cover in case a big ole' hawk comes flying by!
