No backpacks!?

You guys are posting to a thread that's almost 2 years old.

I am so glad I looked at a few of these threads as I had no idea about the purse issue. I'm just glad that they're free to use for the duration of the line and ride. I was thinking - I can't bring my phone, only a card and room key? Glad to see I can bring my water bottle and all the other stuff.

you can get the larger all day lockers in the front of the park at the studios side.

On universals site it says:
  • Soft-sided insulated bags no larger than 8.5" wide x 6" high x 6" deep
Do they really measure the back packs? Or is that for just a cooler? What about an insulated backpack cooler? Is there a size limit on back packs?

They've never measured ours. We use the Igloo maxcold cooler backpack and it's great.

I was thinking of carrying a bag since the parks have gotten stricter but renting one of the lockers for the day and stashing it while we ride the "fussier" rides. I wonder if that wouldn't be easier.

Much easier to just use the free lockers as you get a ride that requires a locker, IMO. Going back to a paid locker again and again seems to be a pain.

when you rent the large lockers in the front, you can open them all day long.
what you paid for the locker is good until you leave the park that evening.
you pay a one time fee for them.

the other lockers in the park near the rides, you pay each time you open/close them.
they are basically a one time only use.

many take lunches, change of clothing, beverages, food, etc that will be used throughout the day so you don't have to lug them with you all day.
it's a good thing the studios has these family lockers.
i've been with peeps that have used them and it hasn't been an issue to return to them for something they stored in there.

now if you only have to use a locker for a bag you can't take on a ride, of course use the free lockers by the ride.
if you are staying from opening until closing and plan to bring your own food, beverages, clothing change, etc, the family paid lockers are a good deal.

there are guests that stay off site and only come for one day.
the locker set up is convenient for them to use for that day.

Also, just a helpful hint, the lockers are tied to the wait time. If you don't get your stuff after the ride, you get charged a fee. We went on MIB and decided to ride it three straight times, we had express pass, but that pushed us past the posted wait time so we couldn't open the locker when we were done. We had to get an attendant and they made us pay a fee. I don't remember how much, only a few dollars, but it is good to know for future reference.

Are the fingerprint scanners finicky? I have had issues in the past, especially with thumbprint scanners. I might have to let DH do it. How big are the free, ride lockers? Will they hold more than a fanny pack, like maybe a small purse and mini-backpack?

I LOVE the free lockers at all the rides. I hate at parks like Six Flags where people leave their stuff in a pile or in open bins while on the ride. You get off and your things are moved or drinks spilled... I never had anything taken, but it would be so easy. This is safe, efficient, and so nice it is free!

We were just there for three days, and we got the locker routine down so we were fast. We only one time had a problem with it reading my sons finger. There are problems with whole families and groups going in and all standing around in a wide befuddled bunch, getting in the way and taking up time. No traffic patterns. Much more efficient to send one person in to do it. We usually crammed in two coats, a backpack, two drink cups and our phones in a pile.

My husband didn't have a problem w/ his fingerprint at all. I almost always had a problem...don't know if it was me or the scanner.

They are quite big, I was able to get two medium messenger bags and 2 plastic raincoats ans sill had some space left.

I never had a problem with the fingerprint scanners, but the trick is to always use the same finger & it works best if you wipe it off with a t-shirt each time before it scans your finger, to remove traces of others' prints.

Do not press your finger hard against the scanner
Just put it gently over that scanner,
It will be easier for the machine to identify and get a positive match

The harder you press your finger the harder it is for the scanner to read your fingerprint, and that's the reason for most of the fails

This trip I had more trouble with the scanners than I ever had. I am wondering if it had something to do with the cold weather. I needed to get assistance several times.

So the rides that you can't take bags, can you still wear the fanny pack on those rides?

Yep I was about to post the same thing :)

I always have a bag and was dreading the ride lockers but they are very easy. They are adjacent to the entrance/exit to the ride. Each station of lockers has a touch screen computer where you do your fingerprint and it assigns you a locker. You visit the same station and do the same process with the fingerprint to re-open your locker when you come out. I did see a few people who had issues fitting an overstuffed backpack into the locker - they aren't large by any means. So be mindful of that as well.
