Both of my dds are getting a small NJ state tax refund. Do we have to file by April 15th? Or does the State not care when they refund you? (There are minor issues with their information and it's gonna be a real pain is all.:crazy2:)

Not really an accurate response.

Any penalties for either late filing or late payment, for both Federal and any State I am familiar with, is based on the amount of unpaid tax. If a refund is due they don't care. The only exception that I know of is the Federal, if you file more than three years late you do not get the refund.

If you owe the state, deadline is April 15. If the state owes you, as PP mentioned, it is three years. If you know that they are getting a small refund already, it sounds like you did most of the paperwork for the refund. Don't let it go too long, Why give the state an interest free loan?

True...but one of my dd's employers used the wrong SS#, the other spelled her name wrong. But somehow her Federal refund came promptly. :confused3For my other dd, she doesn't remember how much she got last year; I suppose we need to try and get her a PIN to process it.
All this effort for less than $80 between the 2 state refunds!! :sad2:
(PS DH and I owe this year, so I am woefully aware of that deadline for payment!)

Thank you Cheshire Figment...I had a feeling you would answer!

I would call NJ.
Go to the NJ tax website for the number... can not post #'s SOME are helpful.
Call back if you get one who does not want to help...as those that do will bend over backwards to help.

Years back I got a small 50.00 refund I was not supposed to (my mistake) they did an audit by mail and added on a fee that was more than the 50 plus interest and a penlaty.... I knew the 50 charge was the auditor being a :rolleyes1 but I paid it as it was my mistale that I knew about and should have corrected.... Funny thig is a little over a year later I recived a check for the entire amount that I paid saying it was an overpayment?????
In the end call as the NJ tax people can make up thier own rules....
