Nitrous at the dentist????

Anyone have nitrous while getting dental work done??? What does it feel like?

I do nitrous while waiting for my knock out pills to kick in.

The first time I did it, I almost had a panic attack because it made me feel like I was getting stoned, something I'm not interested in doing with my dentist. But once they turned down the amount I was getting, it just relaxes me a bit.

For tooth extractions, NO rocks!!! I don't feel a thing. No pills, no IVs needed.

Ha, my brother even gets this for cleanings! He is a dentist-phobe.

I've had it for 3 of my wisdom teeth extractions and it's great, you are aware, just reallly wooooooo out of it and you feel no pain. But you can still follow their directions to open your mouth and stuff like that.

It helps me a lot during dental work. One thing I like about it is that it seems to wear off pretty quickly once they put you back on room air. You don't feel groggy/hungover/numb after. Now my dentist does make me wait a certain number of minutes after going on room air, before I can drive, but it just gives me enough time to let them finish up, let me check out, etc., then I'm good to go.

I've had nitrous oxide 3 times. It just made me feel relaxed and able to get the dental work (deep cleaning) done instead of bolting out the door like I wanted to. It was $280 out of pocket each time so I no longer request it.

They had to back me off because I was laughing and singing. It interfered with the dental surgery, lol!!! Nitrous is nice. I have no problem getting 'high' with my dentist unlike a previous poster.

Dang.. the 70's must have messed up my tolerance level (just joking) It doesn't affect me like this. I always get it before I get the numbing shot, that's how afraid of shots I am. It just relaxes me but doesn't make me want to sing. That must be fun!

Thank God my dentist does not charge me for it. I have it for cleanings and everything. I've had extensive work done on my front teeth (knocked out as a kid with a basesball bat) Anyway, gas is my friend. I love having that option.

I would not hestiate to try it. They can turn it upand turn it down.

Personally, I hate it. It makes me feel light headed and drunk. I've told the dentist that I don't want it but he pretty much insists on it. Instead of making a big scene, I just breathe through my mouth instead.

Edited to add... Almost 30 years ago, I had all four of my wisdom teeth pulled (3 were impacted) by a friend that was in dental school. He took them all out with 2 shots of novocaine and NO. I didn't seem to mind it then but I was only 20yo at the time

I had it once when I was having four teeth pulled to make room for braces. It didn't do a thing for me. The dentist tried telling me a joke to get me laughing... nothing.

Ah, that must be my problem! Except I'm a child of the 80s.

I'm great with it until they start drilling or anything like that. Then it just doesn't seem strong enough to help with my anxiety.

Holy smokes! My kids have had it for fillings at the pediatric dentist, and my cost (insurance doesn't cover any of it) is $15 per visit.

I am having two crowns on Monday and my dentist suggested this for me. I tend to be the nervous type at the dentist.

The cost will be $50.00 more. I think I will go for it. They told me I can drive home with no problems afterwards.

My Ins does not cover this fee.

Me too. I have had panic attacks in the dental chair and even vomited in the parking lot. Sedatives just don't help enough, although I do take a Xanax prior to the visit (in addition to the nitrous.) I have nitrous for cleanings& xrays and I have on occasion had to have my teeth numbed just to get through it. But I go to the dentist every 6 months anyway because I'm terrified of developing serious problems. They nearly had to put me to sleep to do a root canal a couple years ago.

Nitrous makes me relax. My arms and legs feel heavy and I basically don't care as much what they do. I get in the chair, take off my shoes, turn on the tv to something quiet like the Food Network, and cover up with a soft blanket. They turn up the nitrous pretty high so I don't have breakthrough panic and off I go.

(Wow. I sound like a complete nut.)

Cue me as terrified of the dentist as well.

When I have had major work done it is with Nitrous + IV sedation. But for single fillings i have had nitrous dialed up enough that it felt like 3 - 4 strong alcoholic drinks.

The good thing is that once you feel comfortable with what they are doing, you can ask them to lower the dose so you are more aware of what they are doing.

I have done this a couple of times, and by slowly challenging myself I am getting a bit more comfortable with the dental procedures

I get it every time. It's a given...it's on my chart. I cannot have a cleaning done without it. It's wonderful!! I just kind of lay back in the chair and go to la-la land. Before I know it, they're done with my cleaning. I come "back to earth" almost immediately after breathing back normal air and I don't have any side effects.
