My daughter would like to buy a Nintendo Wii when we go in 3 weeks but not knowing much about gadgets can anyone tell me if it's a good idea and will the games we buy here later will be compatible.

I will check on the games, but I've just checked my Wii and the power supply is not variable voltage. If the same is true of the US models then you will need to buy another power supply that is compatible with our 240v supply rather than the 120v US supply when you get back to the UK or alternatively you could buy a step down converter.

With the exchange rate being so good at the moment it's probably not enough of an additional expense to put you off, but you should still be aware of it.

Some research would indicate that the Wii is also region locked. If you buy it in the US then you will also need to purchase all your games from the US, so it's probably not a good idea

There are mod chips around that add multi region support. Ive just fitted a WiiKey to mine. Although just checking the feature list, it adds NTSC to PAL machines, it doesnt seem do the reverse (PAL on an NTSC machine). Alternative mod chips may do it though.

That said, you could just order the games from the likes of dvdboxoffice.com, and they will still be cheaper than the UK prices.

Nintendo will sell you a UK spec power supply for about £20. I did that with my US Gamecube.

I work for a major game store, and know that the US is almost as bad as the UK for the availability of the WII, even nintendo have said that they doubt they'll have enough supplies to keep up with demand till 2008. But the nintendo DS is region free so will work with any game you can buy.
