Any good deals out there? Can't buy online....DS is turning 6 tomorrow & we were going to have to wait to have his b-day party. (He's been very sick with allergies/possible asthma) Well, he's quite a bit better so we're throwing together a family party & we'll still have his "friend party" later. SOooooo, I don't have as much time as I thought to research the Nintendo DS. :headache: (Although, don't get me wrong---we're so thankful he's actually sleeping through the night & getting better now!)

If anyone knows of any in-store deals I'd GREATLY appreciate it! Thanks. ;)

First of all, get the DSi, not the DS lite. It's $169.99 and you won't find discounts. The DSi costs more than the lite, but it's worth it in most cases (if you don't need to play GameBoy cartridges) merely for the two cameras on board (200+photo storage). I traded my DSlite to get the DSi for $70 off at GameStop. Beware that BestBuy coupons exclude game systems like the DS. However, if you have RewardZone $5-10-20 certicates, those can be used on anything. Other stores may have some general store discounts you could use, but I haven't seen any that apply to game systems.

A good starting game is Nintendogs. Highly recommended. Just choose one of the versions with a breed your DS likes, then he can unlock the rest after he plays the game.

You might even want to borrow it from him, if you see the Personal Trainer Cooking software - which is fabulous. Others have suggested the NerfWare for DS protection, but I haven't bought that yet. The DSi isn't exactly the same size as the DS lite, so you need to check accessory sizes carefully.

Thanks for the advice! OUCH...I thought it was cheaper than that, though! We have many gameboy games....are you saying that you can use those in the DSlite? What are the differences? Can the DSlite use DSi games also? TIA!

Happy Birthday to your little guy!

Our DS just turned 6 last weekend and a DSLite is what we got him. We debated about the DSi, but decided that the "old style" would serve his purposes. We got his at Sam's Club and got the extended warranty on it. Also picked up a Nerf case from Target. His favorite game so far is the Indiana Jones Lego. (DH and I are quite fond of it as well!) He also got Mario Kart and Phineas and Ferb, which we haven't done too much with yet.

Thanks! Is this the one in the link in my previous post? Do you mind me asking how much you paid? If we go to Sam's, we'll have to buy the summer membership (which I'd love to have anyway!)

Does the Lite use the little stylus pen? He definitely wants the stylus. We have tons of games from the gameboy he & DD8 share. It would be wonderful if we could utilize those on each system.

Still wondering....do you use the NEW games on the Lite?

Ok, the DSlite can use GameBoy Cartridges, the DSi can't. So that's one important consideration. That Sam's Club item is the DS lite. The DSi is only available in jet black at the moment, so any other color is another model. Both use the stylus.

The DSi has wireless internet access with downloadable games, two video cameras, special image capture software, a flash memory slot, and the ability to play highquality music (not MP3, but similar AAC/itunes format). The DSi also has slightly bigger screens. The memory slot replaced the GameBoy cartridge. I have no GameBoy stuff, and the new DS software is very good. The DSi has incredible sound quality with headphones or earbuds. I use it for professional music with the Korg DS-10 software.

Whoa! That sounds a little questionable for my wildly rambunctious DS6! Does anyone know if DSi games are compatible with the Lite? Thanks!

Right now, all DS games work on all the DS systems, except if special accessories are required that need the GameBoy slot. But that could change if games start using the DSi features. But Nintendo is one of the best for compatability forwards and backwards, historically.

YIPPEEEEE!!! :cool1: Thanks! I guess they have 2 different slots on them? I'm thrilled about this.....I never realized it accepted BOTH types of games!

We bought 2 gameboys on ebay a couple of years ago & they were wonderful (until they lost one!) DS will be so excited b/c he has no idea he's getting this (although he's wanted it for awhile!)

Thanks for everyone's help! Sam's has the Lite for around $127 (plus I'll pay $40 for Sam's membership.) Anyone know a better deal???

My 4 year olds love their DS lites that they got for the thier birthday.
And an added bonus is you can go to gamestop and get old gameboy advance games used for really cheap.

Careful : the DSLite will play Gameboy Advance games, not old Gameboy games. Just so you know ;)

Thanks everyone! I went to Walmart last night & got the DS Lite (in cobalt blue) for $129. We bought the Raiders of the Lost Ark game b/c it was probably the only $20 game that he'd like! :rotfl:

We do have about 15 GameBoy Advance games that he can use. Thanks for the clarification....didn't realize there was a difference in the regular gb games & the Advance games. (Thank goodness ours are Advance!)

Anyway, I'm just really appreciative to my fellow DISers for always giving me the "low-down"!! Have a wonderful weekend!

My son got the DSi for his birthday and loves it! He has been playing more with the camera feature than the actual games!
