Nintendo DS question

My daughter and her friend got the DS for Christmas. We know they can play eachother using the multi player games using wi fi. But we heard that only one person has to have a game cartridge for them to play eachother in certain games.

Do you which games you can play other people but only one person has to have the game cartridge?
