my son will be 8 in a few weeks. he currently has a nintendo DS lite that he has had for a few years and takes very good care of it. my 4 year old son trys to play with it too and does very well.
so here is what i was thinking --- getting Logan a new dsi (or the new dsi xl - that will be out in a few weeks) and giving his brother the older ds.
so here is my question -- can they do the ds download play with a ds and a dsi? do you only need one game disk and the both of them can play against eachother wirelessly? not sure how that works
i know the dsi will not play the gameboy games -- but we do not have many of them and we will keep the old ds
what are your thoughts?
thanks

Not sure I'm an expert, but I do have a ds and have played against my friends. On the back of the game box it should say if it's a single-card play or a multi-card play. Single card means only 1 person has to have the game cartridge and they can play against someone else. Multi-card means each person has to have a game cartridge to be able to play against each other. As far as a ds playing against a dsi, I don't think that should be a problem, unless it's an exclusive dsi title, which I think there's only 1 so far, so that's unlikely to cause an issue. Hope that helps!

Both the dsi and the ds lite have inbuilt wireless. You can connect and chat between the two using the Pictochart option, without the need for a game chip.

If the two kids want to play the same game together, as the OP said, this will depend on the game in question. You'll find the information at the back of the DS game box/container; usually at the top RH corner. If it is a one game card per player, then you will need two games for them to connect. If it is a one game card to many players, then you will only need the one game for them to connect.
In any event, the kids will need to start up the game and select the multiplayer option (instead of adventure/game) to connect and play together.

Just a comment on the dsi vs the dsi xl...I am looking at this too for my DS8 for his birthday in May. He really wants the dsi but then said there is this new one out that's better. I asked about it and the girl at EB Games told me that the xl does not have any technology to enhance and enlarge the screen view, so it will just stretch it instead. What she said you'll end up with is the same technology as the dsi on a larger screen so it will look weird. I asked if she would be getting a demo and she didn't think so. See if you can see one before you buy it to see if this is an issue if you are considering the xl.

The DSi includes the Opera web browser. I can be used for e-mail, Wikipedia, and even to post to the DIS. It's not easy on such a tiny screen, but it is possible if willing to work within the limitations. The Wii also has a similar capability, but with a larger, lower resolution screen.

Be aware that DSi or Wii could be used to view inappropiate material. You will need to control these devices just like any other device that connects to the internet.

Yes--go for it! My ds4 has the ds lite & ds7 has had the dsi since Christmas--great investment. They love to play games together via the wireless feature, their favorite being Mariokart. On the back of the games it will say if you can use if for more than one player. If you aren't sure what to look for, ask at the store--someone at TRU explained everything to me.

Your ds will love the dsi--they can record their voices/sounds & enhance them & of course the favorite feature is the camera which is hilarious when you morph the pictures! There is a place on the dsi that you can put in a password so you only have access to the parental controls, that way you restrict what they can access on the web.

Oh, and something else to consider--Nerf armour for your dsi. Great investment to protect against the inevitable drops! :thumbsup2

sounds great --- DS went to game stop and was drooling over the DSi and the Dsi XL --- told him to start to butter up his grandmother for his birthday. I think it will be a good investment -- that way i dont have to have 2 of each game --- thanks for the input
