I have a silly question that I'm sure I could find the answer to if I scoured my manual, but thought I would ask here first.

I have a D40. There is a small light (no idea what it is called?) that comes on each time I go to take a picture. I'm not talking about the flash. Is it possible to turn it off???? Not only did it make it impossible for me to shoot at WDW in dark rides b/c it was still lighting up and I didn't want to ruin other people's experience, but it also lets my dd know when I'm about to shoot and she always makes faces or covers her face.

I'm not sure if I can turn it off or not, anyone know???

My hero! :worship: It just said AF assist and I never realized that was the light! Will turning this off change anything for me when taking shots? Will it make it harder for AF to work??

It is there to help AF in low light. It will have no effect on AF in good light. Thank you for not using it in dark rides. A tip for the kid shots, you could prefocus with a half press so the child does not know when the actual pic is coming.

I shouldn't matter if you use it or not, but you'll find that without it your lens will have a more difficult time finding the focus point. You might miss some shots because the camera is searching for and locking into that focus.

You'll find that same red-light with a speedlight as well. :)
