Nikon D5000

I think that is the most popular brand. Is she particularly rough on things? I ask because I do not see a need for these for the average person. If she does not plan on using a strap then maybe, but most people use straps.

Thanks, She is known to drop things alot more than usual..lol... Why I got her the Otter for her Iphone.
She does use the strap. I mainly wanted it for extra protection on our travels, vacations etc, not for everyday use.

Probably a wise investment then :thumbsup2 There are a few people on the board that use this, so hopefully one of them will see this and offer their impressions.

Camera armor is fantastic. I highly recommend it.
The biggest draw back is that the camera feels "meatier" in your hands. Thicker. But you don't necessarily need to worry about bonking it on stuff. I still wouldn't want to do a full drop of the camera, KWIM?

Memorize your buttons though because it can be difficult to read what all the buttons do if you aren't already familiar.

ETA: I forgot the mention... one of the nicest parts of the armor is that it's grippy. So you fingers really hold onto it really nicely. It never feels like you are going to drop the camera.

Thanks Chika.. Its definitely going to be a must for her I think.

Ok, I know the D7000 just came out, but it's just not in the budget right now. This will be a first DSLR, but I've got experience with an old school metal bodied canon film SLR (last one made, as my dad always proudly points out).

My primary camera right now is a Canon S3IS, which I have been pretty happy with, just ready to do a little more than it currently allows. These will primarily be for photos of DS (5mos) and other family photos, though I will be buying a 55-200mm lens. I like zoom, hence why the S3IS was purchased. I also have a crappy Nikon P&S.

I liked the screen on the Nikon, especially after having the S3, I think it is probably a "have to" for me to have a good screen. I like that it's one button to change to view through the LCD. I don't like the lithium battery, but it sounds like they all use those.

Ok, those are a few of my thoughts. Any input would be wonderful. I know that it's the photographer as much as the camera, but we definitely need to take the plunge and upgrade to SLR.

Not just a plug for my system, but you should really check out the Pentax K-x. It is every bit as nice as the D5000 and actually beats it in some areas. One thing you will like is that it uses AAs instead of a lithium. There is also the newer upgraded K-r that can still use AAs with an adapter, but comes with a lithium. It might be out of your budget though. I have had my K-x for about a year now and am very happy with it. Before that I had a K100D.

I have had my D5000 for a year and I love it. The best advise that I have seen on this forum is go and try some cameras and see how they feel. I always thought I would want the D90. It was more than I needed, but I thought I would grow into it. I just love how the D5000 felt to me and more in line with my experience with a DSLR. The D90 just didn't have the same feel.

Thanks for sharing, thedeans! I did like the feel, and like I said, I loved that screen!

ukcatfan-Thanks for the pentax review. I'm not sure I want to waiver from my allegiance to canon/nikon right now, but we'll look into it.

Any other experiences?

I had a D5000 for over a year and I really enjoyed it. There are a lot of great features and controls that you would normally find on higher end DSLRs but you have to access some of them through the menu rather than having on camera controls. I think it's a great camera and I definitely learned a lot while using it. I think that I got some wonderful images with it.

You should probably also check out the D3100. You may also find some outstanding deals on used D5000s or D90s now that the D7000 is out.

Good luck!

I used to feel that way as well. Then I researched and handled some Pentax cameras and never looked back. You really cannot go wrong with any DSLR when coming from a p&s. One thing you get with the K-x is the best bang for the buck going right now (and many different color selections :thumbsup2). I also like the feel and build quality of them.

Well, I ended up biting the bullet and we ordered the D5000 last night, along with the 55-200mm lens, an opteka remote, and a 3-piece filter set. It should be here tomorrow or Wednesday (hooray for Amazon prime being free for moms!). I can't wait to try it out!

Congratulations! I hope you love it as much as I do. I have purchased several cameras and by far this has been my favorite.

It came yesterday! I'm starting to feel like a camera junkie...I have my tiny P&S for my purse, the Canon S3IS, and now my huge Nikon...And DH thought I was going to want to get rid of one! HAHA! They all serve separate purposes, so I need them all!

So far, I really like the camera. We really haven't had a chance to play with it a lot, but I got some great shots of DS last night. I'm going to need to get a new, larger bag soon because it's too large for my big bag. It's definitely easy to use straight out of the box and the opteka remote is great. The filters just got here today, so no real chance to look at them yet.

YES PICTURES!! This is a photo board. We want/need PICTURES!! :)

I'm definitely working on it! I've got to take some of something other than DS. I'm not really ready to have him all over the boards right now. Maybe my cats will be in the mood to pose tomorrow, but I'm hoping to get outside and take some nature shots if it's nice out tomorrow. I'm pretty happy with the shots I've taken (and DH has taken) so far, but I need to try out all the settings and just generally have some time to play with it.

Hey guys! :goodvibes:goodvibes
Just got the Nikon D5000 about a month ago, LOVING it so far!!
Anyone else have/know this camera and have any gerneral tips or good disney tips?
I'm 17 and finally got a name on here after months of my mother begging me to do so, haha.
Once she told me there was a photography board i jumped right on.
I just saw a Disney photo tips thread, can't wait to go look at that!!!
Thank You, DrummerChick :flower3:

Hey Drummerchick,
Congrats on your new D5000, as well as your own Dis ID!!!!

Here is a thread I started some time ago that is kind of a walk through of both my, and others, weekly discoveries, projects, etc... with our new cameras. I also have a D5000, so all of the things that I posted are things that definitely apply to your camera.

Feel free to reopen the thread with any questions, pictures, examples, etc... that you may have.

We look forward to seeing some of your shots.
