Nikon D5000

I had this same issue...I was looking at the Nikon 90D I was positive...read everything I could find on it and felt it was perfect for me...I walked out of the store buying a canon 50D...why? The way it felt in my hands. 50D was much heavier and fit my hands better. I loved the weight. The nikon was so light and something about the grip wasn't comfortable...I miss the video aspect of the camera...but to be honest it was the right choice. So go and hold both cameras....

If you are completely set on C or N, then ignore the rest of my post. I would suggest at least considering the other brands though. Pentax, Sony, Olympus, etc. all make some really nice cameras. I upgraded to the Pentax K-x from the K1100D about a month ago and am absolutely amazed by it! It has most of the features of their high end model, the K-7. Plus, it comes in four different colors! I went with red :thumbsup2

DH and I are looking to get a new nice camera, and this weekend we looked at a Nikon D5000. For anyone who has this or similar, what do you think about it, and do you have any suggestions or recommendations?TIA

Did you get a chance to hold it and use it? I recommend playing with a variety of SLRs in that price range before setting your sights on one. To give you a start try to see if you can find stores that carry the Canon T1i, Pentax Kx, Olympus(not sure of comparable model), or Sony A series. Each camera will handle a bit differently and its best to find the one you enjoy using the most.

I just got one about a week ago and I love it so far! I got the kit with the 18-55 AF-S VR and 55-200 AF-S VR lenses. I do suggest holding it and checking it out first. I looked at some other cameras first, but the Nikon just felt right to me.

Just got ours last weekend and so far....love it! Seems to be easy to manipulate. Is there much to learn? Oh yes! But...it doesn't seem to be too difficult. Yesterday I got a book..."Mastering the D5000"...and it tells you anything and everything you need to know about the camera. We did try the Canon T1i, but liked the way the Nikon felt. We also got a great deal on Adorama.com....check out this site.

Not much help but I bought one about a month and a half ago. So far, I really love it. I always had Canon's previously but I liked the feel of the D5000.

I purchased my D5000 in September 2009. I love this camera. I also looked at other cameras, but the D5000 felt the best to me.

I tried a few out at Best Buy and Ritz and thought the D5000 felt the best for me by far. Actually, I originally was looking at the D90 (and really I still kind of wished I waited to get that) but the D5000 felt a littler better in my hands and much better in my wallet.

That being said, I love my camera. Picked it up in August and have taken over 10,000 shots with it so far. It's been out in the heat and recently out in the snow (mostly covered) with no problem. Any questions about it, ask away.

We bought ours last year for our trip to Alaska. takes amazing pictures, and I have been nothing but pleased with it.

Got mine in November. So far I couldn't be any more pleased with it. So much to learn, yet so much fun doing it. I also got the kit lens and the 55 - 200. I do find that I use the telephoto lens quite a bit more. The next step is to get a nice fast lens (1.8 or 1.4) for those pesky inside sports shots.

Lele, pay attention to the Goof's posts. He's still learning and a few steps past most of us newbies to the world of DSLR. His posts "This week I'm learning" are awesome.

Goof- I grabbed the 35mm 1.8 for $200 and love it so far. The Sigma 30mm 1.4 goes for double that but everybody that has it, does nothing but rave about it. The DOF from both is very nice but the 30mm is definitely a few steps above the 35.

Thanks for the kind words N&Ldad, I don't know if I'm any steps ahead of the class, I just have a rabid curiosity to learn all that my expensive little toy can do.
You also guilted me into doing something new this week. It's been kind of a crazy week, and I was considering just letting this week go by without any new experiments, but after your nice post, I had to do something, so I went ahead and did a little experimenting with the WB bracketing (and updated the post).

the $200 1.8 is most likely what I will be saving my pennies for. From everything that I've seen about it, it takes some really nice shots. Be sure to post some of your shots from it (especially any indoor, low-light shots). I would love to see more of it in action.

I too have a new D5000 (Christmas present) I am still a newbie(very much so)...and am learning, but loving it...my kids are tired of me being in their faces every day:rotfl:hopefully better weather will come and I can focus on getting out with it!

I'll be sure to check the goofsters thread...

Love mine too, I have had it about a month or so. I got the kit with the 18-55 and the 70-200 at Best Buy, and added on a 50mm 1.8 that I got for $124 on Amazon. I used to be a Canon girl and left for the store with the intention of getting the T1, but the Nikon totally fit better in my hands. Also don't think the 50mm has come off the body since the day it arrived - I had never shot with one before, even in my film days, and am completely smitten.

Unforunatly our local camera shop doesn't sell Canon right now, but we did look at the olympus, nikon, and sony. We liked the olympus as well as the nikon, but they did advise the olympus is harder to find accessories for. We are borrowing DH's brothers 35mm that would be comparable to the d5000, and I LOVE IT!!! I've gone through 10 rolls of film in the past week. There is no way we could have a film camera lol

The package we are looking at comes with a lens and you can add the 55-200 lens for $100 if you buy a kit, and you can get an accessories package (bag, class, tripod) starting at $150 dollars just depending on what you get. Hopefully we will make our way back next weekend.:woohoo:

Did you get your book at barnes and noble, or should they have it. I will definetly need something like this.

We too are tossing up the idea of the D90, b/c you can use the screw driven lenses, but we can't justify the added cost just that one feature. Have you used any filters or similar things with it yet? What did you think? We won't be going to best buy on this one, but ritz. We have gotten 2 other camera from best buy, and after you buy them they don't want to help you any more which was a major pain since I had a lot of trouble with one of my camera which I purchased their extended warrenty on and all they want to do is clean it when that's not the problem.

When you say "screw driven" do you mean the older style lenses that actually screw into the camera? If so, there are also new lenses that don't have the focus motor built into the lens. Those lenses are cheaper, and in my area seem plentiful on craigslist. Right now I have the 18-55 kit, 55-200VR, and the 35mm 1.8. If I had the D90 I'd have more lenses but the $$$ is keeping me at bay.

Another big plus on the D90 is supposedly the weather sealing. However, I took out the D5000 out last week in "Blizzard like conditions" wrapped up in a ziplock bag with no problems.

I don't have any filters yet but will be looking into them very soon.

I bought my camera at Ritz also. The guys there actually know what they're talking about when you ask them questions. The warranty offered by them covers everything except lost, stolen, and fire and covers the body and both lenses. Not sure how much it went for but the guy took off a couple dollars from the 55-200 so the with the warranty added on, it was only an extra $100. Also, the warranty gives you 1 free cleaning.

The bag offered as part of the package is OK as first but not for me. Within a week or so I had the Slingshot and haven't looked back.

To be honest... I'm not sure what screw driven means, thats just what dh was calling the lense (at least I think that what he called it) It's the lenses like what were on the 35mm.

Leleluvsdis,

I ordered the book from Amazon.com.....it only took 4 days for delivery. Great book!! Lots of info....it will take some time to go through it, but will be well worth IMO.
