Nikon D5000

As far as I know the D5000 has the same processor as the D90. I have a D90 and with a Sigma 30mm f/1.4 you can get the following.
All were shot at 3200 ISO.

Nice shots GoofyontheHiSeas! Did you use noise reduction software? I have a D90 and I use the 30mm 1.4 at 3200ISO, but my photos seem to have more noise than yours. Are you using Lightroom or NX2 to post process?

Hey! I know those people! Great picture!

Don't get your hopes up with the kit lens on a moving ride. The kit does just fine on a tripod, but low light moving rides...

Thanks all for the info.
It's too bad I can't use the 1.4 lens off nmy SLR.

You can use the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 lens on your camera. I think the other person was thinking you only had a kit lens (the lens that came with your DSLR). If you want to be able to take dark ride shots, you'll need a lens like the one Roger (GoofyontheHighSeas) used. Nikon also has a 35mm f/1.8 lens that is similar. I personally really like the 30mm Sigma.

If your SLR was a Nikon the lens should fit the D5000. You will probably have to use manual focus and possibly manual apreture. I still use my old nikon slr lens on my D300.

Right now, I only have the 18-55 and 55-200 kit lenses.
I'm going to Disney next week, so whatever I have is it.
I have a Beseler Topcon Super D SLR, which probably none of you has ever heard of. It was the first SLR to come out with the meter mounted on the back of the mirror. 40+ years ago, it was rated as the equal of the Nikon F, which was "the camera" of the time. It has what was then called, a Pentax mount.

You know, you may be able to get some shots on the brighter lit parts of certain rides depending...I know when it's more crowded they tend to make the boats in POTC go by a lot faster than when it's slower. So it's harder to get the shutter speed up high enough without the fast lenses. But, when it's slower (crowds), they tend to let the boats cruise by at a much slower pace and when that happens it's a lot easier to get the shots in the darker areas, so I can only imagine you may be able to get a few of the brighter lit areas. Also, IASW is brighter lit. Haunted Mansion may be out of the question. If you only have the kit lens, take a look at the crowd levels. If you go on POTC during a show/parade or at night it may be slower and have lots less people on it than during the day when everyone is trying to escape the heat. Less people = slower vehicle=slower shutter+more light to try to capture a shot or two. Otherwise, just enjoy the ride as best you can. Good luck!

Thanks for mentioning that! It seems every time I ride POTC I come out with different results. This August was crowded & hot. Maybe the boat was faster and that's why my pics were a blur. Yes, I know I shouldn't blame it on the boat:rolleyes1Can't blame it on the Sigma 30mm it's a terrific lens. My fault:headache:

You're welcome! It's really true though. Pirates is like my favorite ride in the whole world and I go one it over and over again when at WDW and DLR, and it's just something I've noticed along the way...

Sorry, but I do not believe that this is accurate. I have a good friend in Engineering that spent the past three years designing the new boats for POTC. We had numerous conversations about it and they do not change the water speed on the ride. If anything I believe it would have the opposite effect where more boats create more drag and turbulence making it slower when busy. Also, when it is busy, the exit tends to back up and you can get some times where you are not moving at all.

Hmmmm....I haven't been to the world in quite a few years, but I do know that it is this way in Disneyland. I've been on that ride at DL hundreds of times, and there is a distinct difference in the speed of the boats when it's slow and when it's crazy busy. It also backs up sometimes when it's really busy at DL, but the ride still moves faster until you get to where it's backed up. I've also had it back up for a moment when something happens to the ride and it stops for a few minutes.

His project was to design the boats for both Cali and Florida at the same time. He explained the system in pretty good detail to me. The speed of the water does not change on either ride. Maybe there is some sort of a drafting effect when there are more boats on the attraction that reduces drag and speeds them up. :confused3 I cannot even begin to understand the engineering behind the ride (even though he explained it :rotfl2:).

Very good captures:thumbsup2 What was your exposure time and were they all shot at f1.4?

Thank you. Yes these are all shot at f1.4. I usual shoot in speed priority on dark rides so there are some shots (not these) that may go up to f2. Of these, HM was 1/30, and the two POTC were at 1/40 and 1/60s.

Or do I need something else? Also would it be large enough for the D5000 with the 55-200 lense and the 18-55 lense AND some odds and ends or will that be tight?

TIA!

So if it is Christmas eve / day and we are inside will I wish I had another flash? If so which one will I want?

Welcome to the world of DSLR and EAS (equipment acquisition syndrome). There is always something you wished you had.

In terms of lighting quality and what you can do with it, an external flash is so much better than the pop up flash . I'm sure some of the Nikon knowledgeable folks can help you with selection an external.
