Nikon 28-105 lens

Occasionally, I lurk over at Nikon Cafe. Recently, there have been a few posts about the Nikon 28-105 lens. Many over there seem to really like this lens. Well, I just happen to have one of those. It is brand new, in the box, never been used. I sort of inherited it and it has been sitting on a shelf for several months. I'm thinking I should get it out and try it out. It has a macro function, but I have no idea what that mean. How does that differ from normal function?

Does anyone else have this lens or know anything about it? I was thinking of selling it, but now think I will keep it and play around with it a bit.
