Last night on they way back from Glasgow delivering presents to my cousin we got caught behind a 4 car pile up on the M8. We (DD-aged3) and me were stuck in car for nearly two hours which we managed to pass by , by opening a box of chocs and sitting under blankets with the radio on and looking out the window for Santa' sleigh (just in case he was running a little early
).
The nightmare only began when I tried to start the car. (I'd turned the engine off after the first half hour sitting) and the electrics failed. Not even the hazards worked ! I was terrified there were cars , lorries , buses etc thundering round us and as emergency vehicles were still using the hard shoulder I couldn't even roll the car over there. I phoned the breakdown company who seemed to ask a million stupid questions and half way through the conversation realised all the queueing traffic had passed and that we were on the dark with no lights at a bend so i cut the call lifted Jessica out of the car and ran over the the roadside . I was scared someone would run into the back of us and made the decision that I could live with a smashed car but not a smashed daughter.
I called the breakdown comapny back and was prepared for a long wait but then the best thing happened a police jeep came and towed me over to a police layby out the way and let Jess sit in the back. He then let us sit there for the hour it took the breakdown company to appear as we had to go back up to the previous junction to let them in as they'd closed the road to allow them to clear the original accident. So we went our only trip the wrong way up a motorway.The breakdown truck was one of those huge things that your car gets lifted on to the back and that's how we ended up being taken home where another breakdown van came and Jumped started the car 5 hours after we left Glasgow originally (PS the journey is only normally about 40 minutes). DD seemed to take the whole thing in her stride but I was fraught (and as Tigger(Heffalump movie) says you cant argue with a word like fraught
)
The moral of my tale is to pass on the advice I was given by the three hero's who rescued me as a damsel in distress .
Please check your battery before undertaking any long journey , carry a torch to put in the back window so you can be seen if the electrics fail. Ignore the breakdown comapny who tell you to stay in the car if possible. If you don't think it's safe follow your instinct and get out -you will know better and most importantly don't turn of the engine , apparently if I'd left the enging running none of his would have happened.
Happy travelling everyone !!
