Nick Saban Calls It A Day

According to ESPN:

"Breaking: University of Washington coach Kalen DeBoer is negotiating a contract to replace Nick Saban at Alabama Football, sources told Chris Low and Mark Schlabach."

Saban is going to stay in Tuscaloosa and will have an office at Bryant Denny Stadium.

Will be interesting to see how much DeBoer goes to him for advice and how much he includes him in the Program.

Not belittling what he did for the school. Have no idea what he did for the school. Not an Alabama Fan simply going by the win loss record
I was directing towards you personally -a lot of "fans" say the same thing by looking at a record and not understanding the whole story. Is he a great coach like his father -not even close, but he's a former Alabama QB who did his best during a pretty hopeless period.

Dabo played there, he coached there, and UA wants him.
This is true ...probably too much built into that clause in his contract regarding leaving for Bama. I think it was around $9mil to get out

I mean ...Saban wouldn't be a horrible recruiting tool!

As per USA Today: https://www.usatoday.com/story/spor...labama-clause-contract-explained/72194589007/

  • 2022: $6 million ($9 million)
  • 2023: $5 million ($7.5 million)
  • 2024: $5 million ($7.5 million)
  • 2025: $4 million ($6 million)
  • 2026: $3 million ($4.5 million)
  • 2027: $3 million ($4.5 million)
  • 2028: $2 million ($3 million)
  • 2029: $2 million ($3 million)
  • 2030: $1 million ($1.5 million)
  • 2031: $0
Prices in parenthesis are if he goes to Alabama. I still think it's a strange ask.

Smart move on Clemson's part -understanding that there was a high risk of him leaving Clemson, especially given Saban's age
Eh, maybe. I disagree with discouraging someone from getting their dream job though. I mean he's been at Clemson for 20 years, HC for 13 (10 when they put this clause in the contract). I would want someone who WANTS the job, not someone who feels like he's forced into it.

I get having the buyout clause, I just disagree with an extra amount for Alabama.

In the last few years Alabama has "soured" on Dabo, he was not seriously considered.

Did they want him when it was first put into his contract (2019)?
Yes. It's clear that Saban would be retiring long before Dabo would, and Alabama had their eye on Dabo as a replacement.

The clause doesn't bother me. I doubt Dabo would want to go to UA anyway, but it also ensures that he has to think twice about it.

Reggie Bush is saying that the real reason Nick Saban retired is because NIL has leveled the playing field and Nick Saban cannot handle competing on a level playing field.

Wow! ROUGH shot at the retiring GOAT!

DeBoer is currently flying to Tuscaloosa.

I hope he enjoys these last few hours of "normalcy".

He is about to enter a world there is no way to prepare for.

Good luck and Godspeed.

I took the liberty of fixing it for you.
I don't think that will happen. (There is apparently a legal reason why Denny's name must remain; that's in the legislative record from when Bryant's name was added.) They could add Saban's name and double-hyphenate it (which is clunky), or, as I think more likely, Saban will get the field name, so it will become Saban Field at Bryant-Denny Stadium. (I'm not sure if Alabama has an after-demise rule on naming university facilities, but they are pretty common in the South, so you may not see any facility naming until after his death )

It was not meant to be taken seriously. Denny was the school's president from the teens to the 30s, Bryant, I trust you know who he was. The legislature added his name. A lot of places name the field, and the press box different names too. Have to have a score card.

Isaiah Bond is transferring to Texas and rumor is Caleb Downs may follow him soon.

It appears that Nick Saban still having a "presence" in Tuscaloosa and that he will still have a "connection" to the team is not going to be enough to keep everyone.

If Bama continues to lose players of this caliber and recruits like Ryan Williams,it does not portend well for the DeBoer ERA.

Caleb Downs has indeed entered the Portal and will most likely follow his position Coach,Travaris Robinson to Georgia.

If that happens Kirby Smart will have poached arguably Bama's best Assistant Coach and arguably Bama's best Player in the wake of Saban's retirement-talk about salt in the wound.

September 28 will be quite the scene in Tuscaloosa-I think I know where Gameday will be that day.

By the way it is thought Downs' NIL value is north of 2 million dollars.
