We are planning for next year. We need to visit my husbands family who lives in Houston but they have no room for our family of 4 to stay. A couple years ago we rented a place in Galveston and we all stayed there. We are looking to do something different, but something that wouldn't be too far from Houston (no farther than San Antonio or Austin). I was thinking San Antonio so we can do Sea World. All the places that looked nice with nice pools seem so expensive. Any ideas?

If you want to go just a little further, I would pick Corpus Christi. If you stay out on North Padre Island near the National Sea Shore, you can get a nicer and/or cheaper place than closer in and still have the beach.

In San Antonio, the closer the hotels are to the river walk, the more expensive they are. If you can bring your own bedding, the KOA campground at the edge of town has cabins you can rent. The city bus picks up right outside the campground and you can get a bus pass pretty cheaply. There are lots of free/low cost things to do in San Antonio.

The San Marcos area might be another option. The Shlitterban water park may be open on weekends by then. I can't remember the name right now, but there is also the place with glass bottom boats and the swimming pig. It used to be very touristy, but the university took it over. I haven't been in many years.

The The Westin La Cantera Hill Country Resort outside San Antonio looks PERFECT but is very expensive. I rather stay there than stay by the River Walk area.

No camping for us. We have some special needs in the group and need something super comfortable.

Corpus would be cool but that is an extra hour away. I feel like we are pushing it as it is asking them to drive 3.5 hours away.

If they end up wanting to be closer to Houston, do I have any options?

What part of Houston are they in? There hotels of all different levels all over if you just want a place to stay near the family. If you want more of a resort type place, you could look in the Woodlands or mayby Lake Conroe area which is about 1 hr north of Houston.
Depending what you have already been to, there is plenty of stuff to see/do to keep you busy.

Hmmmm, I think they are northwest or so. But they are not in the Woodlands. What is Lake Conroe like?

Since we can't just stay with them, I want a vacation out of this! It costs so much to fly, we might as well all get a nice vacation (and my DH's mom can really use some time away from her apartment, she has been taking care of her special needs son for 34 years, she only gets to do fun stuff when we make her!). So we would either get a big place and stay together or get 2 separte rooms someplace.

Last time I was in San Antonio - December - I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express here:
120 CAMARON STREET
SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS 78205
Front Desk: 210 281-1400

With parking, it's about $100 a night & is easy walking distance to the Riverwalk & the market. It's not as convenient as staying ON the Riverwalk, obviously. But, it's half the price of a similar place on the Riverwalk.

We spent a week in San Antonio last summer and stayed at the Drury Inn & Suites (North location I believe). Our room was about $80 a night. The hotel was fairly new, very nice and clean, short drive to Sea World and the Riverwalk area. Drury is our favorite chain. Free breakfast, 5pm Kickback (we used as our dinner each night), free popcorn/soda, 2 free drinks per adult. Some charge parking but this one didn't.

Lake Conroe is about an hour from the airport. Maybe less depending on traffic.
It is good for fishing, boating, skiing. There are places you can rent boats. There is not much beach though. Accommodations range from motels, resorts and houses to rent. The area around the like is has a somewhat rural/country feel, but is close to the Woodlands with all the big city shopping and restaurants.
It is not too far from Houston so that you could easily visit some of the museums in Houston.

We LOVE this Drury. It's really nice and the location and food offerings are great. We've stayed at several Drury Hotels in San Antonio, and the 1604 location (near Stone Oak) is the nicest we've found!

We live in Houston and love to get away to Galveston Island. We have neighbors who go to the Lost Pines Resort in Bastrop every year. They say it's a great getaway with tons of resort activities and not too long of a drive. (It's a little closer than Austin)

Yes! That's the one!
I can't wait to try the new one opening next to Universal in Orlando later this year. The one in SA really hooked us on them :thumbsup2

We like to do mini-vacations in San Antonio whenever we can. It can be done pretty inexpensively. I always use Priceline for hotels and always stay in the downtown/riverwalk area. Last summer, we stayed at the Emily Morgan for $69 a night and before that, we got the Hyatt on the riverwalk for around $80. My daughter has gotten the same kinds of rates at Christmas time using Priceline, so spring break should be no problem. It's a fun city; I love it!

Thanks for all the info! We NEED a place w an outdoor pool. Does the Drury have that? I am on my phone so when I am home I will look everything up :)

Don't know what your budget is, but the Houstonian in Houston has a fabulous resort pool complex. Pools are heated so it is always nice in the early spring. It's our favorite staycation spot.
