nice neighborhoods near Boston?

Winthrop is nice, and right on the water, has a commuter rail...

Winthrop has the Blue line (subway/rapid transit) near by and MBTA busses, not direct access to the Commuter Rail. Closests Commuter Rail stop is Chelsea.

A little further out, but try south of Boston. I lived in Duxbury, but how about Hingham, Marshfield, Scituate? You could either drive partway and pick up the T, but I would probably just drive to work. The towns are beautiful, good schools, land for a garden should not be an issue. I think everyone's right that you'll likely have to compromise on something. Lots of people commute in every day and it works, and the area is a great place to live. Good luck!

Peabody. I know someone planning to put a five bedroom house on the market this spring :)
