Nothing really new in that article but I am intrigued by the white customized magicband they took apart. The first pic of it it kind of looks like they painted it though with some overspray in the grey removable piece.
their speculation is actually a little wrong, they don't track you in the sense they are tracking your every move with them. (my speculation is it would violate a patent they don't want to license). they do some tracking like if you scan your band somewhere i'm sure there is a transaction record. most of their tracking is done via your phone and the app (and in the last few revisions if you have bluetooth enabled it uses your phone to figure out wait times per their terms of service on the app). Disney does hold many interesting tracking patents though down to the electronic noise your devices put out, your footware. No clue if they are in use. personally I would track you anyway I could including the snooping of chips on credit cards if I was disney (this is not saying they do, just saying I would if I ran this part of disney which I don't and I don't work for disney at all). I've seen some people trying to sort out how the research team knew their name when they had nothing trackable on them except that they used a credit card to get a bottle of water..
now with that said, I saw a job posted about a year ago for a data analysis to take all this data (not just magicband data as it listed data from the whole my magic+ setup which includes the app) to detect possible 1 on 1 experience opportunities which the answer they got from disney on tracking you does coincide with.
