I have had the same hand me down, every day dishes for 15 years. My mom passed them to me when I got married. They are Princess House and very good quality, but I've been wanting a new set for awhile. Do you have any recommendations for quality dishes that won't break the bank?

I've always been afraid to buy new ones because I've heard the paint chips or they fade or they just don't last. The ones I have will last another 15 years I'm sure, but I would like my own set.

My mom is wanting to buy me Longaberger, but wow, they are so expensive and I really don't want her to do that ($236 for a 4 place setting of a large plate, small plate and bowl). 4 matching mugs is $64. It is a very nice thought but I it's just too much money.

Another vote for Homer Laughlin Fiestaware - great colors - sturdy - MADE IN THE USA - got mine at Kohls (4pc placesetting - don't recommend the 5pc) at a great price and used my Kohls cash to buy some serving pieces.

Another vote for Corelle. I have a set that I bought about 7 years ago on Amazon and they are still going strong. They were about $40 for a 16 piece place setting. Best of all, the white Corelle dishes match with the pattern I got (Hot Dots) beautifully, so I've been able to add to the sets as needed.

We tend to use stoneware, my honey likes hefty plates and bowls (me not so much) so we buy open stock at Bed, Bath and Beyond. That way if/when something gets chipped, we just replace it since it came out of open stock. I'm also sort of weird in that I like to mix and match my colors and shapes so open stock works well for that. I will admit that I also tend to switch out my dishes about every 4 or 5 years, I'm easily bored and also have dishes for holidays as well.

Another vote for Fiestaware. I love mine. It is sturdy, doesn't fade or chip and the best part it is made in the US.

another vote for Corelle. Mine are square, love that they are not round. very durable and reasonably priced.

Mine, too, are square. I really like them because they are thin and lightweight. Easy to store in a cabinet.

If you have an Ikea near you, they sell great sets of dinnerware. DD20 bought the square white ones and they have held up so far to her occasional carelessness. I have two sets of white dinnerware from Target that I love - they have a white beaded detail around the rim.

Not to highjack the OPs post but why do you suggest the 4 piece over the 5?

This week I have been so busy I am recommending Dixie - paper plates!

I have Corelle and Fiesta and use both everyday. I also have Disney dishes that I love to use on occasion, especially the summer melamine plates for sandwiches in the backyard.

Just buy what you like. Sooner or later something will scratch, break, shatter or crack no matter what it is, so buy what you will enjoy everyday.

I also have expensive bone china and I don't remember using it. Maybe time for a yard sale....

Interesting thread. I'm also on the search for new dishes. We got a set when we got married 10 years ago. Unfortunately, many of the plates and bowls are now broken. Our set was from Macy's The Cellar and is no longer being sold so we can't just replace the broken plates and bowls.

We love our Correlle, too. I'm not a fan of the heavy stoneware, and this is lightweight, and it's been dropped about a zillion times over the past 12 years that we've used it daily :P

Check at Temptations. Sold on QVC. I don't have the dishes/place settings because I don't need any but I do have many of her other pieces. I like how you can keep building on a set and how you can mix and match. I have the Old World pattern but I really like the floral lace pattern...especially the robin egg blue color. Very popular, always sells out.

Another vote for Corelle. Ive been married 20 years now and have bought several different sets of "cute dishes" and finally got sick of constantly changing them and so we bought a simple white corelle set last year and I LOVE it
