My son wants to visit Rochester, NY during Spring Break around the middle of March. What would a visit to Niagara Falls be like during this time of the year? All of us are totally unfamiliar with this area. We would also like to go into Canada. Any help would be appreciated! We only have a few days so not a lot of time to explore everything.

I hope you get some replies....Dh and I are planning to visit the Falls in the future and I would love some inside info on what to plan. DH has been before and said that the Canadian side is the best place to go to see the Falls.

Seeing the falls is ALWAYS beautiful - but it will most likely be cold.

The weather in the Buffalo/Niagara region has been VERY odd so far for March. We've gone from single digit temps to 57 degrees in the course of 24 hours. Average temps for this time of year are about 40 - 45 degrees.

The US has the better falls, but you definitely get a better view of them from Canada. The downside is that the Canadian side is VERY wet. All of the mist blows onto the Canadian side.

Canada also has a MUCH better developed tourist area - Clifton Hill. They have better hotels, and better activities. There's not too many restaurants on the US side - but I've not been a fan of the few I've visited on the Canadian side. Buffalo is only about a 15 - 20 minute ride from the Falls, and our restaurants are definitely top notch! :)

If you're coming over a spring break period (I'm not sure when those fall) - you will face a LONG line at the border to get into Canada and vice versa. The Canadians love to come over to the US and shop at the Buffalo area stores. Great for our economy - BAD for anyone waiting to cross the border!

If you have any specific questions, let me know! :)

The Horseshoe Falls (the famous part) is actually on the Canadian side and are Canadian-owned..... U.S.A. owns the smaller, less exciting ones...

Just a friendly correction!:)

Next week in March break for many of the schools and I know a lot of families at our school are planning to take mini vacations to niagara falls throughout the week.

Which week exactly is your march break. As noted above, ours is next week so it will be a little busier than the following week. The mist that was stated is only within 200-300 yards of standing at the edge to view the falls on the Canadian side. The US currency exchange rate will help your dollars go further. It hit .77cent range today, lowest in 5 years. As also stated the Canadian side has been expanding for the last 10 years with the 2 casino's as the draw. Lots of new hotels and restaurants. Do some research on the internet as things to do and Welcome to Canada!!!! :thumbsup2 :cheer2:

My family does a 2-night getaway to Niagara Falls once or twice a year just for fun. While the weather is not optimal at this time of the year, the hotel prices are also more realistic than during the summer "tourist" months.

Other than the Falls, some fun attractions there (depending on the age of your family) are the Butterfly Conservatory and the Bird Kingdom. Both are indoor, but feel very "tropical" and provide wonderful photo opportunities. There's an IMAX theatre with "The Falls - Legends and Daredevils" showing. Clifton Hill has wax museums, arcades, Rainforest Cafe, and the Niagara Skywheel (like a giant ferris wheel but with heated gondola cars). You can also ride the yellow-bug elevators up the side of the Skylon Tower. There's a restaurant there, but the prices are insane unless you go during "Early Dining" seatings at 4:30 or 5:00 when there's a prix-fixe menu available. (They have a kids' menu as well) The revolving dining room is nice and we enjoy the views from there, then go out on the observation decks afterwards.

The "Journey Behind The Falls" is open year-round. Raingear is provided, and you get to go down into the tunnels and experience the force of the water pouring over.

There are some family restaurants in the galleria of the Niagara Casino, such as "Shoeless Joe's" or "Johnny Rockets" Not fine dining, but decent quality food.

Have fun planning! If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

check out great wolf lodge in the falls dont know if there will be any availibility at that point in time with march break but it would be a greatplace to stay with kids.:thumbsup2 canadian side of course!:cool1:

Thanks for all the info. My DS is college age and his break is the week of 16 March. I'll be asking more questions when we settle on when we are going.

March Break here is also the week of the 16th, so expect big crowds! The Canadian side is definitely where you want to be, and to correct a previous poster, the Canadian falls are the nicer ones that form a horseshoe (hence the name). The touristy area is called Clifton Hill. Some of the best attractions there include the Ripleys Museum, Louis Tussauds wax museum, the Skywheel, and the Fallsview Waterpark which is shared by 4 different hotels. You can also just walk down the promenade by the Falls and take it all in. I would consider it a daytrip, and at most would spend one night unless you're planning on hitting up one of the waterparks. Enjoy!

Just remember it'll be cold! Don't forget Rain Forest Cafe on Clifton Hill. Personally I think Clifton Hill is a tourist trap, but what the heck - I've been going there for 50+ years.

Also don't forgrt the casinos on both sides if you like that kind of thing.

There is nothing like standing behind the railing, a few feet away from the brink of the Horseshoe Falls, watching the water flow over the edge. Just awesome.

This website is a good resource:

Have a great time!

Edit to add...The Keg steakhouse located in the Embassy Suites hotel (next to the Fallsview Casino) is an EXCELLENT place for dinner, with a great view of the falls.

We stayed at this Embassy Suites and had a fallsview room about 2 years ago. It was so awesome. We could watch the fireworks from our room on like the 34th floor. Beautiful view of horseshoe falls and had a big jacuzzi.

The hotel offered a tour package. For one price you get all the touristy stuff: Maid of the Mist, Journey Behind the Falls, a ride to top of the tower, butterfly conservatory and an IMAX show.
Right next door was a Marriott with a cool magic show that was free; no tickets or anything. You just had to know it was there and our hotel offered it. :thumbsup2

It was end of June when we went and still needed a jacket at night, while at home it was still very hot. I'd def. bring a coat in March.
I think the fireworks are only on certain nights in peak season though.

I live in Niagara Falls, Canada..and I still get chills sometimes when I look out over the falls. You will have a lot of people to deal with, as all the posters have been mentioning, but it's nothing compared to Disney crowds!!! I am assuming that your son is at least 19? If he is, then he is considered of age here in Ontario and he can visit the Casinos and will be legal age for drinking as well. This might put him over the edge for visiting the Canadian side..lol!! Clifton Hill can be a big money trap, but even walking around and looking is fun there. It's a great place to live, I always feel safe walking around here, it's an interesting place to visit..you have people from all over the world wanting to see one of the 7 natural wonders of the world!! If you do come I hope you have a great time!!! Any other questions you need to ask a local, just let me know!!:thumbsup2

I would suggest to NOT try this...

NIAGARA FALLS, Ont. – A man survived a plunge over Niagara Falls today and was in hospital with hypothermia and a head injury after a dramatic river rescue.

A tourist called police at about 2:15 p.m. to say he saw a man climb over the retaining wall above the Canadian Horseshoe Falls, said Sgt. Chris Gallagher of Niagara Parks police.

"The male was observed going down to the water's edge and jumping in of his own accord into the river above the falls," Gallagher said.

The man was swept over the falls and plunged almost 60 metres into the Niagara River below. Police spotted him floating about 300 metres from the base of the falls in front of a power plant, Gallagher said.

Officers yelled at him to swim to shore, but he wouldn't comply. A helicopter from a private firm was sent to retrieve the man but was unsuccessful. However, the chopper hovered above the man, using the force from its rotor blades to create a current that pushed him toward shore, Gallagher said.

Police would not identify the man, but said he appeared to be between 35 and 40 years old.

Once the man was close to shore, the fire department's river rescue unit pulled him out.

"He was suffering from severe hypothermia at the time and there was a large head wound to the top of his forehead," Gallagher said.

Police did not have any further information on the man's condition but said he was taken to hospital.

Although the man was rescued naked from the river, witness reports indicate he was fully clothed when he climbed over the wall, Gallagher said, adding it's not unusual for clothing to be ripped off by strong currents.

He's either suicidal, or just a complete idiot. Either way, I'm thankful no one else had to risk their lives to save him.

I believe it was a suicide attempt (accroding to Q107 this morning).

Anyways, the thing I have noticed about Niagara Falls lateley is the $$$$$ - Wow have the prices gone up.

I went to TGIF - ordered the Jack Daniel's Chicken (Normally $13.95 in the US), was $34.95.... :scared1:

Be prepared...

The food prices are definitely escalated in Niagara Falls. $34.95 for Jack Daniels Chicken at TGIF makes the Early Dinner at Skylon an even better value ... three courses for $36.95 and includes the elevator ride to the Observations Decks too!

The Keg at the Embassy Suites is also more realistically priced in comparison to TGIF ...

The thing is, if you don't live in Niagara Falls this seems crazy, but unfortunately this happens more often than people realize. Either from a suicide attempt or stupidity people go over all the time, you just don't hear about the bodies being found, or the bodies aren't found. This sounds crass, I'm sure, but it's true. Don't let something like this deter you from a fun vacation. Anyone who lives near water will agree that it is a dangerous place if you aren't careful, and we are surrounded by bodies of water here in the Niagara Region. It's what helps to make this a beautiful place, but it can also be a danger. Hope this helps?

A good way to warm up if the weather is chilly, go to the Butterfly Conservatory for a few hours. It is a great facility.
