Might also depend on whether or not a team has retired numbers. The Raiders have a single retired number - 00 for Jim Otto, but the fact that the NFL stopped allowing its use made it easy.

The NBA is even odder. They allow 101 different number combinations - including 0 and 00. The Warriors have a 0 (Dante DiVincenzo) and 00 (Jonathan Kuminga) on the current roster.

Not sure what the rule is now, but I do remember in NCAA men's basketball they only allowed digits from 0 to 5. There could be just one player with either 0 or 00. But otherwise the uniform numbers had to be 0-6/10-15/20-25/30-35/40-45/50-55. The rationale was that referees would signal player uniform numbers with both hands and each hand represented one digit - where a 0 was signaled with a fist and 1-5 with fingers out.

(I'm too old. I can remember NFL players' jersey numbers from 1970 but I can't remember the 4 things I have to pick up from the grocery store.)

I totally realize this is a nothingburger but it really bugs me when an athlete wears 0 or 00. Who wants to be a zero? If I was an athlete, I'd never wear it, nor would I want my child or spouse or friend or whatever wearing it.

I like it. College made the change not long ago and it’s fun to see the 0 inning around.

The first athlete I remember wearing 00 was goaltender Bernie Parent of the WHA Philadelphia Blazers in 1972.
