We decided that today after the festivities at my husband's grandmother's annual get together. It's bad enough that way too many people are crammed into a tiny little house, but this year had several other uncomfortable moments culminating in one of my husband's cousins telling racist jokes about Hispanics and African Americans for about 30 minutes. Of course, all of these good Christian people thought it was just hilarious. I got up and went outside after the first couple of jokes because I knew I couldn't sit there quietly for much longer.

The only way we could get out of this without a huge amount of grief is if we are out of town, so I'm already planning a trip for next year. Hopefully we can go to WDW, but if we can't swing that, any place at least 3 hours away will do!

I'm sorry but I had to chuckle at the racist joke remark coming from someone whose user name is Ms.yt (Miss whitie). :rotfl:
(I know that's not how it's intended but it cracked me up.)

I've never thought about my username being read that way. Those are my initials. But that is kind of funny.:lmao:

i would LOVE to be away for the holidays!! DH and i are planning a trip in a few years to WDW from Christmas thru New Years.

i'm not a big "holiday" person to begin with(i have personal reasons) and i don't enjoy being crammed in a small house with 40+ people who are getting drunk and decide to tell everyone how they should live their lives. but that's just me...

After many years of Thanksgivings of hours of prep, cook, and cleaning while the guys watched football I decided that instead of taking our fall trip the first week of December that we'd go over the holiday. Sure, my family was a bit peeved at first but after the 3rd or 4th time they wrote me off for Thanksgiving:)

This is the second year in a row that I've been home and realize now that I need to get back to scheduling WDW starting Turkey Day. Believe it or not, the airports are empty ON the holiday and the flights are at their cheapest!

Vacationing at Thanksgiving at WDW is horribly crowded and somewhat expensive - not as bad as Christmas and Easter but prices do go up. Tell them you're gone and stay home, lol!!! OR-tell them you're sick at the last minute.

Um, Thanksgiving Sunday is the single busiest air travel day of the year.

Well, we usually fly ON the holiday for cheap money and that's our travel day...hang by the pool on Friday and go out for a nice dinner to Boma or elsewhere, maybe do a 1/2 day at the parks on Saturday and then the rest of the week is blissfully slow... now, I wouldn't go just for the weekend:scared1:

I understand. Years ago my in-laws used to leave for Florida the day after Thanksgiving and not come home until early April. I never could understand why she wanted to be away from her kids/grandkids for Christmas. I thought it was so sad. :(

Now that I'm older I'm beginning to understand, especially after Thanksgiving yesterday when our son and daughter were pretty much not even speaking to each other. :( I hated that, and told DH that I now understood his Mom's feelings more.

The only way we could get out of being here for the holidays would be to take my Mother with us though. She would never forgive me for being away from her. And since I'm an only child it's not like she has other children she can spend the day with. :(

My oldest and I actually went to WDW during Thanksgiving break a few years ago when I was pregnant with my youngest. It was fine up until the day before, and even then not so bad. We flew home on Thanksgiving afternoon, and I was amazed at how empty the airport was!

Oh, I have been talking about this! Since one of the cruise lines has been running commercials with Christmas music in the background and showing everyone having fun in their bathing suits, I thought I'd really like to do this. I never thought I would want to be away during the holidays. And growing up in the northeast, it wasn't Thanksgiving or Christmas without the cold. But that commercial was mighty tempting!

If my brother and his family ever say they will be gone for Thanksgiving (I host that), then we will be gone.

Ohhhh a cruise! I hadn't thought about that. I may have to look into that. My husband has been wanting to take a cruise, so this would be the perfect getaway.

My parents are both deceased, and my sister doesn't come home for Thanksgiving. My family does things the day after Thanksgiving at my aunt's, but they are reasonable people who wouldn't be all mad if we didn't go. Besides the fact that I just don't enjoy Thanksgiving much without my parents around, the craziness at my husband's family just adds to the reasons to skip the holiday!

For the first time this year, I told DH that I didn't want to have Thanksgiving with any of his family.... just too much drama. Instead, we got together with friends... had a blast! Really... the best Thanksgiving possibly ever.

We have always tried to get away during Thanksgiving. Funny considering your location but our preferred spot is Eureka Springs.

That was something I would like to try too. Our very best friends have always left a standing invitation for us for Thanksgiving, but I always felt responsible for doing the family thing. My parents are both gone and my brother is my only sibling. We have had this tradition for 30 years of brother's family coming here for Thanksgiving and we go there for Christmas Eve. But without our parents, it really seems to have lost something, even though we try.

Another good idea! I love Eureka Springs, and my husband has never been.

My husband and I both hate family gatherings and don't do them. We also do not expect our adult children to hang out with us or our families (and they gratefully do not). We had a great time at the movies yesterday.

I threw my holiday tantrum about 4 years ago after an 8 hour cooking session (which everybody consumed in about 20 minutes at the table) and approximately 4 dishwasher loads of dishes. I came to the conclusion, there are some people who enjoy doing the whole holiday meal feast thing -- and then there is me.

Yesterday, we had a pre-cooked Prime Rib because nobody here even likes turkey all that much. Nearly all the sides and deserts were catered in. The dishes were disposable and it was just our immediate family. I got to watch football with my family and didn't have to feel like a kitchen galley slave the entire day. What can I say, I don't enjoy cooking and I don't enjoy family drama and stress.

I keep threatening to book a cruise over one of the Holidays but I haven't yet. It sure does sound tempting.

not to be blasphemous, but we like to do Universal over major holidays ( we have done both Tday, and NYs). When you stay on site you get the FOTL passes for every attraction, all day long, so any crowds are irrelevant!

We went one year at Thanksgiving-thinking most folks stayed home to eat turkey-boy were we wrong:lmao:

I think the year we went the week before Christmas-and drove home Christmas eve-was the best crowd-wise

We go off almost every year, to the beach or to see the Dallas Cowboys play. Well, really we have only been to see the Cowboys once--last year, but we are going again next Thanksgiving. We decided to stay at home this year because we are going to Las Vegas for Christmas/New Years and wouldn't have the money to do two trips. We WILL NOT stay home again. As others have said, too much drama. We will go back to doing a smaller trip at both Thanksgiving and Christmas---at least until we have grandchildren. We also took trips at Thanksgiving when our kids were little. Plan it and have a great time!!
