Next Food Network Star ~ Official 2009 Summer Thread

what they ought to do is give Jeffrey and Michael a show together.

Bumping this thread up since the show is on tonight.

Anybody watching so far? My favorite person so far is now Melissa. I'm really glad she managed to push herself over Jeffery.

I really like Melissa... but I adore Jeffery.

Is it wrong that I smiled when Debbie got smacked in the face?

I did.

I don't like Melissa, but I think she's a demographic Food Network doesn't have.

Love Jefffrey and Michael, can't stand Debbie or Jamika.

Melissa is just like Robin Miller to me.

I'm indifferent to Katie. She won't stick around much longer so I don't have to give her too much thought.

Well, that was a pretty obvious choice tonight, I think. He had no "presence" whatsoever in front of the camera or a crowd so I can't see how he would have ever advanced.

In all honesty though, I still hope Debbie gets the boot soon! I realize when you get whacked in the cheek, it's going to stun you for a minute and the pain will surely linger, but she was really milking it, IMO. And as far as her using it as a defense for her bland chicken ~ I'm pretty sure her chicken was already prepped before he got her so that was a cop-out.

BTW, since we all seem to be coming back here to discuss each week, I'll go ahead and change the title to make it "official" now. :thumbsup2

Agreed. DH and I said the exact same thing. I don't understand what they see in her at all. Every time she says she is going to make (fill in the blank) with an asian flair, my DH says sarcastically "Oh what a surprise!"

Melissa, Michael and Jeffrey are my favorites. If any of those three win, I'll be happy.
I think they'll end up keeping Debbie til the end, however. They really like her.

Did I fastforward it too fast tongiht? Was there no advantage to being the winner of the hamburger, other than Bobby using the receipe?
And did they say how they decided who got what state to cook for?

It's funny, at the beginning I really liked Debbie, couldn't stand Michael. Now it's just the opposite. Love Michael, he's totally grown on me, cracks me up every week...can't stand Debbie...c'mon, seriously? She didn't even have a bruise...I know that sounds mean but I get terrible debilitating migraines and I still do my job with a smile, I'm sure I could cook if I got whacked in the face. Might be a little more salty because I'd burst into tears from the pain, but I wouldn't whine and I'd just compete!! She always finds an excuse...poo on her, I don't like her. :snooty:

I think Melissa has really improved from week 1. She was like a 15 on energy week 1, now she's like a 7. Much better!

Katie's improved, but she'll probably go home next week. Wasn't shocked about Teddy & Jamika I still like, but I think I like the others better. Jeffery I felt bad for, he just had a bad week.

And I'm totally in for the Michael & Jeffery show. They'd be awesome together.

What an improvement by Melissa :goodvibes She was just soooooo on this week. I think she is a top contender :thumbsup2

Jeffrey finally stumbled. His food wasn't strong so his personality took a nose dive with him - that lobster pot pie lucked awful  Glad he is still on the show as 1 bad week shouldn't have sent him home.

Debbie and the integrity crap - pot calling kettle black ;) Hope she gets the boot next :wizard:

Michael give me anxiety just watching him. He could go right after Debbie in my opinion.

Jamika is okay. But we already have the Neely's so that market is already covered.

Katie is kind of bland and talks down to people in my opinion. Another one that will probably be gone sooner than later.

My two faves are Melissa and Jeffrey :thumbsup2

Ditto - on both milking the accident* and her repetoire! And not just "an Asian flair", but "Korean-______". Because... Food Network is looking for someone with a Korean cooking show? That's pretty narrow. Asian, maybe - they don't seem to have a regular (read: daytime/primetime) show with that focus at the moment, but just Korean?

But it's okay; with any luck, she'll be gone long before the finale.

*Michael was right - she should have indicated she was behind him. The Chefs on Top Chef do, and he doesn't have eyes in the back of his head. Debbie knew where they both were, Michael didn't - so it's her own fault.

You didn't miss anything - I'm watching it again right now. The 'only' advantage to winning the mini-challenge is having your burger on the menu at Bobby's new restaurant. The advantage/perk in the second part is 'merely' having an article in USA Weekend, July 4 weekend.

And they didn't get to pick their food/region - the baskets were assigned to them.

How about all those instant replays where you heard the tray meet bone? WHAM! It sounded very painful! Especially the last two or three times they replayed it.

I was really impressed by Melissa today. She ran away with the challenge by a long shot. The others seemed to fall apart, except for Michael. I think what he needs to do a show is have a studio audience. Apparently he makes good camera time if he's got people to play off of. If they cater to his strengths, they probably could get a decent show out of him.

I felt badly that Jeffrey and Jamika sort of imploded. They have potential.
I knew Teddy was in big trouble. Katie still annoys me. And she can't seem to cook her food properly. Food safety issues not once, but twice? She's a goner if it happens a third time. I wish they'd just make more shows with Ellie Krieger if they want a healthy cooking show. And Debbie? I think after the first week, she isn't a villain to me. But she really had no excuse for weak seasoning.

I am not sure who I like the most yet. I keep changing my mind with each episode!

One thing that has been bugging me this season is how the judges want every single speech by the contestants to have a personal link. Tonight would have been a perfect night to make it more of a tribute to the troops instead of having to incorporate some personal story into the presentation.

I'm not really sure I get the "personal link" stuff either. If I like someone's personality, then I like their personality. I don't need to hear a bunch of sound clips about their life. Just have a nice personality and tell me about the food.

I am with you all on this! I am so sick of Paula and her discussing her life. I don;t care about Michael or the family. I want the food. I don't want to hear about Rachael and her "Sweetie". After a tidbit or two I am nauseated by it.

I was surprised that there was not more of a tribute to our troops on this one. I do believe that is why Melissa does well, she seemed to wing it and go with her heart, in this case her Mom and her service. Then she let it go.

I really like Michael. I think a live cooking show something like Cooking Live with Sara Moulton would be right up his alley. He could discuss cooking techniqes and still keep me engaged because he seems to be energized by the audience. His food always looks so good and yet I think I could make it at home. I miss Sara :sad1: and I miss real cooking shows on Food TV. I never missed Live when it was on.

I am glad that Teddy went. I could not watch that guy in TV, I know that Katie would bore me to tears and I am sick of Debbie and her Asian Flair. I think that they are keeping her because there is a void in that area on the Network. If she can develop her cooking skills there may be an audience. I wonder if her repetoire is strog enough though, I keep remembering that she is the Trifle Queen and ialready know how to turn storebought cakes and pudding into dessert ;)

Jeffery seems to fall apart and that was a shame, he is a strong cook and I think I could sit through one of his shows.

I was also hoping for Katie to go home, but I'm glad that Teddy got the boot. Next week: Katie! Then Debbie.

My top two: Jeffrey, then Michael

Jeffrey had a bad day, it happens. He's usually completely on point. Michael is a little crazy but in a likable way. I can't remember if he has ever prepared anything the judges didn't like...? I don't think so.

My DH just informed me that he booked us on a cruise with Paula Deen and her groupies (the timing fit in well with our vacation plans). Her voice makes me want to bash things. :rotfl:
