News Round Up 2020

That’s absolutely subjective. Ford V Ferrari. Not a blockbuster. Not Sci Fi. Not superhero. The movie is so far and a way a better theatrical experience than at home. Same with Invisible Man.

What needs to be understood here is these moves are taking away from people like me. Something that I have had a life long love for and memories of. If movies stay theatrical, it’s not taking anything away from you, or anyone that wants this stuff go to streaming.

Who wants to take it away from you? Idea is more choice and expanding the pie, not one or the other

Expanding the pie results in one eventually going away. Will theaters go away today, tomorrow, in 2021? No. But this all expedites that transfer

Amazon expands the pie on where you can buy toys instead of just having Toys R Us. Just kidding, now there’s no Toys R Us (unless you go to Canada). Movie theaters don’t operate for free. WW84 making 30M opening weekend isn’t something Theaters will bow down and thank WB for them allowing them to have the option of playing it in theaters. With these cinematic shows coming out, there’s absolutely no need for movies to also go to streaming.

But there are still plenty of toy stores and you can but toys in Target and Walmart and tons of other physical locations

So using your win metaphor some theaters will go out of business but plenty of others will exist - some more niche, more conglomerate, but plenty of places to go

Theaters will not become obsolete. It’s one of the most quintessential date night experiences. I used to just show up and see whatever was about to start. My friends and I went to every midnight HP release. Stood in line just to buy Star Wars prequel tickets. Saw all LOTR movies multiple times. Those memories mean a lot to me. But now I’m older, I have a 10 year old and I also have no tolerance for cell phone use during a show I paid too much to see.

But whatever. I sense a “move this discussion elsewhere “ post coming soon. ;)

And Disney has plenty of forms of entertainment in the parks. CMs getting laid off, Oh well. Disney’s adapting. Going with a smaller approach with employment. There are plenty of people that don’t care about in park entertainment, just give them exciting rides and they’re good. Plenty of YouTube videos out there of CoH if you need to see them. Dapper Dans will stay around. That’s enough for the parks entertainment fans

So...trying to bring this back on topic, I just realized that Busch Gardens Tampa is doing holiday fireworks this weekend and next, and even though I’m about 15 miles from the park, I can see them off my second floor balcony! Never been able to see anything from Busch before. So they must be shooting either more, or shooting them higher in the sky.

Again, I think you are overreacting.

But hey, I'll thank your generation for the demise of all my favorite brick and mortar stores. 😉
Why go to the store when you can buy online. A bookstore? What's that?

Things happen. This is when you learn what melancholy memories mean. Welcome to getting old. 😂

I'm teasing you.

Are you sure its not a neighbor? 😀

Yeah. They’re coming from far away. At first we just heard some muffled booms and thought a neighbor was doing work in their garage. But went outside to check and we could see tiny fireworks way off in the distance in the direction BG would be. And the amount that was going off leads me to think it was BG because it was way too many for a backyard show.

I miss fireworks!!!

Would you also call concerns for global warming an overreaction? Huge ramifications won’t likely occur in our lifetimes, but they’re coming. Same thing here (except that it’s not as serious as life and death). Just because something isn’t going to come to a head in a day or two doesn’t mean you can’t see the writing on the wall. Theaters were barely surviving before the pandemic because studios didn’t care enough to help them. Now studios are completely taking advantage of them. Their survival, without a bailout is an almost impossible task.

Not my generation that ruined brick and mortar. I still go to Barnes and Noble at least once a month. I haven’t bought anything online that I could at target/shoprite the entire pandemic except for my PS5 that I got from Amazon

Deleted - you're upset, no need for me to argue. :)

I understand that part. I'm talking more about before the pandemic. Its more the streaming thing that bugs me. I can't believe so many seem to love the idea of watching everything at home. Since they are releasing more movies on Disney+ they will most likely raise the price of it.

I know a ton of people who go to movies. I know more people who go to the theaters than watch at home. Heck, my high risk mother and step-father are still seeing movies in theaters in Oklahoma, because they love it so much. They won't eat in a restaurant or go into a shop though.

What does age have to do with it?

We are couple in 40's with no kids and we go out all the time (or did). It's hard to believe, but you don't turn into a hermit after 40.... 😬

We just don't like theatres because they are obnoxious over here. We stopped going years ago when a fight broke out.

You need an Alamo Drafthouse near you. Never had a problem at one. We pretty much won't go anywhere else, even if we have to watch in 2D.

true, but the older you get the more you appreciate pause button for a bathroom break!

There's an app for that.

There are definitely movies that practically mandate a theater experience. As you said, Ford/Ferrari is one of them and then, of course, the recent Midway war movie. So maybe we'll see a more paradigm shift towards theater-only targeted movies; I have no desire to watch a drama in the theater.

"This year, Epcot's Candlelight Processional was canceled because of the pandemic, but cast members who would have normally be part of it did a small-scale version of the performance outside of the church Saturday. Singers wore masks and the crowd was socially distanced."

I can't make it today, but wish they would do this again this month.
