News Round Up 2016

There is so much in MK/DLR that have no ties to Walt nowadays. Stitch, Wreck it Ralph, all pixar, Lion King, Ariel, etc are not Walt or legacy. This is a wide ranging argument over what is Walt's legacy (Mickey Mouse and unique properties, or Snow White and repurposed fairy tales?).

Anyhow, I think we need to accept that Disney as an entity has always needed to expand from a "princess" centric property, and Marvel/Star Wars give it the platform to do that. And Star Wars uniquely is an open book for them to speak to adults/children/boys/girls. I think its a positive. And I'm sure it will be "incorporated" and not replace. I'm sure we'll still see Tinkerbell flying from the castle and not Boba Fett. ;) You can argue Star Wars is as much fantasy as Pirates or Sea Witches... and that is something Disney can work with. Maybe some of that is my wishful thinking, but I have confidence.
My problem is it's a whole show in DL park about Star Wars. I have no problem with a Star Wars segment but a Disneyland fireworks show should encompass the entire park not just Star Wars. Give me a fantasy segment, Star Wars segment, adventure segment, tomorrow/future segment, New Orleans segment, etc. that's a full rounded fireworks show. A Star Wars show works great in a park like DHS or Paris studios but Disneyland it just seems odd.

Nailed it!

I'm a big Star Wars geek and I wouldn't want to see an entire spectacular dedicated to it at DL. As part of the show -- especially at DL where it will be a part of that park -- it's just fine. But as an entire show projected on the castle... just no.

Really?

The "classic" of the classics Snow White was 17 years old when Disneyland opened. Star Wars today is almost 40 years old. It is far more classic than Snow White was when the park opened (in terms of movies).

The point is - things change and move. Star Wars is as much a part of current era classics as Snow White and Pinocchio and Peter Pan were when they moved into the parks.

Star Wars and Marvel and Pixar are part of the family.

I'm not arguing about Star Wars' status as a classic or its classification within the realm of fantasy. I'm okay with Star Wars, Marvel, Muppets, Pixar and whatever else going into the parks, but at the same time I personally believe that there should be a limit to which a certain property should be featured in a park. My opinion is just as valid as that of someone who didn't want Frozen to be in Epcot or the Muppets at the MK. Bring Star Wars land to Disneyland if you want, but don't try to turn the Magic Kingdom concept into ''Star Wars land... And friends''

And just to clarify, I'm not saying that's what's going to happen. That's what I don't want Disneyland to become.

Spirited rumor update!

DHS's ToT/Guardians overlay isn't officially off the table but at least is until some new things are added to the park where they could then take an attraction offline. The Epcot guardians plans aren't a done deal either.

Star Wars fireworks! Coming to Disneyland and Disneyland Paris in 2017!

Bob Iger and Bob Chapek feel Disneyland has been living in the past too much. They want to focus on the future and the future is Star Wars. So coming early 2017 is a brand new pyro and projection show based on Star Wars to both of those parks. These will be the new nightly fireworks show. However the Star Wars fireworks show in Paris won't be at Disneyland Paris park it will be at Walt Disney Studios park and that show will be similar to what is shown at DHS. They have been testing projections on ToT in Paris for this.

Bob Chapek also got a nice healthy budget approved for DLR for post Star Wars land...

Potter in California hasn't hurt Disneyland numbers.

I wish they would STOP pushing so much SW at DLR. It is not the future for that park. WDW, sure, go nuts with it, they have the room and a constantly changing crowd rate here to do that. But DLR?? That's the original, Walt would have never wanted a land in his magical kingdom devoted to a single IP. Let alone his nightly firework show which he saw as a kiss goodnight. Ugh.

Just my two cents, rant over. Back to a single railed train for me...

I should have kept reading further....THIS!! God please why can't they do this! They had it close with the forever fireworks! Started with an orange grove... A magical kingdom was envisioned!!

Rteetz for Disney Parks ambassador!!

Walt saw it as a way to keep a guest in the park spending money longer. Not trying to be a cynic, but to say Walt wanted the fireworks for any reason other than keeping people in the park longer is not correct. They are a unique and special part of the show, but they exist for purely capitalistic purposes.

Exactly. He saw people leaving at 4-5:00 and was like we need to keep people here later.

Personally I am fine with a Star Wars segment but the entire show being Star Wars over sleeping beauty castle seems off/wrong to me

Like you say it is part of the "family" and I just think the entire family should be represented in that main nighttime show - both new and old members

This isn't on Cinderellas castle this is on sleeping beauty castle at DL.

Small World closure in WDW.
My daughter just returned from Disneyland and said that the first segment at Small World there had been refurbished to include some Disney Characters. Just wondering if this will be the case when Small World at WDW is closed for refurb; any rumors out there? She said she really liked it with the update.

Disneylands small world has had Disney characters in it for years. No rumors of Disney characters coming to the small world in WDW.

Guess I don't hit Disneyland too much and being in Arizona, it's definitely closer to me than WDW. After WDW, Disneyland just seems so small and congested.

As I stated in my original post:

These things tend to follow a very familiar line with rumors:
Rumor is that Disneyland is being replaced with Star Wars - what are they thinking!!!
Well, OK, Disneyland is being half replaced with Star Wars
Ok, there are lands being replaced by Star Wars
Ok, well maybe just a petting zoo and Toon Town
Ok, well just the petting zoo
Hmmm, thats interesting, they put in Star Wars without destroying the rest of Disneyland and did it in a nice tasteful way.

I'm pretty sure that the entire fireworks show will not become Star Wars. Why? Because, it alienates a large portion of the customers, it doesn't fit the castle theme, and it doesn't make any logical sense. Will there be a "Season of the Force" type event for a couple months? Maybe. Will it be 50% of the fireworks show? Maybe. But... again... I highly doubt Tinkerbell will be replaced with Boba Fett flying from the castle and Dumbo will be replaced with the Millennium Falcon flying around the Matterhorn. (Wait.. now that I wrote that I WANT to see both of those! ;) )

I just wanted to say that I think saying that the current corporate honchos care nothing about the legacy of Disneyland is a completely unfair accusation. I think they do seriously take it into consideration in all that they do. If they didn't, it is extremely unlikely they would have bothered to save the Rivers of America. Yes, it's been reduced in size, but it's still going to be there. While somewhat popular, it is severely under-utilized acreage as compared to the rest of the park. It would have been MUCH easier and cheaper for Disney to just take over most of that land area -Maybe leaving the fantasmic stage. They wouldn't have had to uproot so many backstage areas and such had they chosen to do that. But they chose to take the more expensive and difficult route in order to keep it.

And for those envoking "Walt wouldn't want this" (something I completely HATE) I will point out that Walt was the one that said "Disneyland will never be finished as long as their is imagination left in this world."

As to the specific topic, well - I agree that the fireworks at Disneyland should NOT be Star Wars only - but I think it is too premature to determine that this is really going to happen. It really doesn't make a lot of sense to have ONLY Star Wars in the fireworks.
