I would think since the original plans had them and all the research into the bands, including the patents put forth, I wouldn't characterize them as minor. I would think the location information and that type of info would be super valuable and they don't get that from phones...at least not mine.
The bands will hang around for people without phones. But a minor update to the app requesting NFC access and boom - your phone/watch is MDE capable.
If you want to get technical they already know your phone is there. What they don't have is that phone is you. Of course, considering your phone pings in everytime your magic band gets scanned, it wouldn't take a rocket scientist to make a system that links the two together.

If you don't want to be tracked I hope you're carrying a Nokia 6110 from 15 years ago...
