News Round Up 2016

Perhaps different threads could be used, and those who want to continue personal comments/discussions could do so without having to endure the endless complaints from those of us who don't. Just sayin'

They are used on the bigger topics. But this is a forum. Forums are designed for discussion, it's their primary function. And good information comes out of those discussions too.

The only way to make a thread news only would be to make it so only one person could post to it.

And really, it's not like it's hard to find the news posts in here. It's just not a problem that really needs solving.

Going back to Innovations, I've read that Disney is waiting for Sponsorships to partner with on new attractions/displays, which is why the area was stripped last April (hard to believe that place has been that empty for almost a year).

Does Disney really need a Sponsorship to put up an attraction/display?

I don't view them as a middle school football team.....

Speaking of those cuts... I thought this graph of CapEx as a % of Revenue posted over on WDW Magic by Parentsof4 was quite telling:Disney Growth Capex.jpg

We're not at the lowest ebb ever but clearly Disney isn't straining themselves right now.

As someone else noted however, OPEX (Operational Epenses) and CAPEX (Capital Expenses or new building) are separate, so it would be interesting to see if OPEX has been increasing or decreasing during this timeframe...

I agree. To compromise a little bit I started putting the bold headline to show that this is news or a photo update for example.

No they don't but Disney has always had sponsors. Part of the reason horizons went away was because of the sponsorship ending. Disney would rather not pay for everything if they don't have to.

I think Future World in particular (but also other parts of the parks) has always relied on corporate sponsorships. It's just getting harder to find them as companies start to question what their ROI is for things like that.

I get the impression that sponsorships are slowly eroding into history. Hopefully they re-evaluate the concept sometime soon. Sponsors might be drawn to a great idea....

One more on the subject of budget cuts (and if people want to shunt this into its own thread I'm fine with that).

While Paris and Shanghai may be the major factors in this cost cutting exercise, there may be other things at play here too. What about the recent reports of budget over-runs with Pandora for example? Why are WDI's projects always so expensive?

To some extent we could be seeing chickens coming home to roost with a new manager showing that there's only so much money to play with. Use it all here, and you'll have to cut there...

It's not that I don't like the discussion or that it shouldn't happen. I would just prefer it somewhere else than here.
Do your moderator abilities have to split bits of a thread out to a new thread?

This thread is great for bringing up new topics. Some gain legs and discussion, some don't. The only way to separate out the noise is to move it. The discussions are good, but giving folks a chance to tune into which conversation they like is also vary nice.

I want to know the answer to this question. Has a WDI project ever come in under budget. I mean even look at Disneyland that had delays and a budget that was not met.

I will look into it.

I'm going to assume that something must have. Dinoland maybe?

But you're right. The pattern was set right from the beginning by Walt. Just throw money at things and figure it out later. Which might work when you're a private company lead by a charismatic owner. Doesn't fly when you're a publicly owned company essentially run by accountants.

I have started a thread regarding the budget cuts if we would like to continue on going discussions there.

Well... Some not so great news here. Its now being said this will be affecting the DHS budget. It shouldn't affect toy story much but what comes after with Star Wars and the possible phase 3 or 4 is really what it could hurt.

Talk about being divorced from the long view. I would speculate that every dollar spent on Star Wars construction will be returned exponentially in relatively short order.
