After 9 weeks on Atkins I went for a checkup. Everything was great!
Cholesterol 149
HDL 50
LDL 87
Triglycerides 60.
Now for the really fantastic part!
My DH, Trey, was diagnosed with diabetes last April. His glucose was regularly in the upper 200's. With Trey's heart problems, he really does not need out of control blood sugar playing havoc on his organs. Our GP put him on Glucophage and sent us for diabetes education and other than that, we were basically on our own to figure all of this out.
We followed the diabetic diet for several months and his blood sugar levels were still high. Even on medication. He was pretty discouraged. His RX ran out and he quit taking his Glucophage (and I didn't know it.) Months went by before I found out.
In June I decided we needed to do something different to get our weight under control. I started lurking here at WISH. I read about all of the wonderful success stories here. The one that particularly caught my attention was Wilgus, Katholyn's DH. He was able to control his diabetes with Atkins. We discussed it and decided to both give Atkins a try.
We decided to see an endicrinologist (a diabetes specialist) since Trey was unhappy with the assistance from our GP. Trey got in to see the endicrinologist for the first time after about 10 weeks on Atkins. We have not gotten the lab results back yet, but the Dr. did check his blood sugar and give him a meter for home use. His level was only 109. 120 is considered diabetic. Since then it has been 121 once. The rest of the time it has stayed in the 90's-110's every time. That is with no medication at all! The Dr. said he most likely won't need it. He said to continue doing what we are doing and come back in two months.
I wanted to thank all of you WISHers for your support and encouragement. Especially Katholyn and Wilgus.
