Not realizing food allergy questions should go here, I posted this in the restaurant forum. I did get a few helpful answers but thought I would post it here too for more help, plus I had a few more questions. This is all new to me!
Just when I thought trying to figure out a 1st trip to WDW couldn't get any more confusing and overwhelming, I was thrown a curve ball and now have to plan around an anchovy allergy. I just picked up my epi pen a few days ago. Never had a food allergy in my life. I was certainly surprised to discover this.
On the good side, I can think of a lot worse allergies to have so I feel fortunate in that way. However, anchovies can be hidden in things to add flavor to a meal, especially sauces. I've searched the disboards and read enough to know I should email WDW special diets, ask to see "the book" at counter service places, and talk to the chef at sit downs. But, my search did not come up with anyone specifically having an anchovy allergy. Just wondering if anyone else has dealt with an anchovy allergy and if they know of any places to definitely stay away from or dishes to avoid. I realize the food changes all the time, but wondering if so far anyone has discovered anchovies in the BBQ sauces used there.
From this board, I also learned I should have a Frio case for my epi pen since I'm going in June and expect it to be hot. Anything else I should know about flying and/or traveling with an epi pen? I don't know what I don't know.
I also have to say I'm now a little nervous about any fish or even shellfish in general. Two months before my anchovy reaction I ate mahi mahi and one shrimp and was fine. But now I don't know. The blood test I had on these fish came back negative, but then so did the anchovy one and that was clearly wrong. I ended up having a food challenge at the doctor's office in order to confirm the anchovy, but I can't spend everyday eating different foods at the doctor's. Has anyone else had an incorrect negative test?
Sorry for so many questions. I just want to learn what I need to learn in order to have a fun, safe WDW trip and I know many of you have more experience in this area. Thank you for your help!
