Please help me before I give myself an ulcer!!! My DS is 1 month old and keeps getting congested. Not a runny nose just yuck up there. We have seen dr and they said he is fine, just use Little Noses drops and the nose sucker. DS, his name is Andy, eats well, is pleasant, and uses a pacifier with no problem. When I clean out his nose, he goes hours before I need to do it again. Could it be a sign of a milk allergy? We are currently switching over to Soy by mixing both formulas and the nose seems a little better. Also, we have no pets but my sister who lives with my mom has a rabbit that she lets run free.(Andy has not been near the rabbit, just in same house) Could he be allergic to the animal dander?? And if I put him in the bassinet at night and I fall asleep?? SIDS isnt from stuffy noses right? I know the drs know best but my gut says he is stuffy from the milk or rabbit. And I do have a DD6 so I have done the mom thing before but this is like starting over!!! Any help would be great. Going to go drink some tea and calm my nerves!

I think a milk allergy is a strong possibility. If it is a bit better with the mixture of the soy that could be your answer. I think to know for sure he will have to be completely off the regualr formula for a bit and if the improvement is better or he stops completely you have your answer. The rabbit is a possibility, but the question is does he get worse when he goes to your mother's? If he does and then improves after a day or 2 at home you may need to have grandma come see him at your house and not go to hers. You should wait to see how he does when he is completely on the soy. If after a while there is no improvement start keeping a log of when he gets more congested,(where has he been, what has he been around, how long he was around it, how long it takes him to improve etc), that way you may be able to figure out what triggers his symptoms. Then you and your doctor can figure out what you need to do to solve the problem. I would try not to worry to much unless it is really affecting his ability to sleep. It may staighten itself out on it's own. Try not to stress yourself out over it. If he is otherwise healthy, try to keep telling yourself you will find the answer in time. You are not a new mother so you know when something isn't right, trust your instincts. If you aren't getting any improvement and the doctor still insists it's nothing to worry about try another doctor and then another until you get an answer that makes sense. I know how hard it is. Last summer my DS came down with what seemed like a stomach virus, but he would be really sick to his stomach for a day and then feel better the next, he'd have a high fever for a day or so and it would go down and come back up. After a week of this I took him in to be told he just has a virus. The next day he developed a rash. I took him back in and the doctor treated me like a hysterical mother (I've been at this 10 years and I am most definitely not that), looked at the rash and said yeah he has one but I don't know why(this was a DR who was normally at a different office) and sent me home again. The next day he had his highest temperature yet and was very lathargic so I took him into the ER. I just knew this was more then a virus. We got really lucky and got a doctor who looked at his rash(by now the small spots were huge and red with a white center) and listened to his symptoms and said, "He has Lyme Disease." This made sense to me as he had been up at my IL's cabin 2 weeks before in northern Minnesota. He brought in another doctor who insisted it was a viral rash and every nurse in the place came to see the rash for themselves because no one had ever seen Lyme. They did a spinal tap and ran all kinds of test. We went home on amoxicillan, and back to our regular doctor the next day. He was so much better after 12 hours on the antibiotic I was convinced he did infact have Lyme. Our doctor who I trust implicitly still wasn't convinced, but a week later the initial test indicated he did have it. We had to wait for the Mayo Clinc to give us the definitive answer a week later, but I am glad I stuck with it because he could have had some serious permanent side effects if they had taken longer to get the right diagnosis. I am not saying you are dealing with anything this life altering because I am sure you aren't. I am only telling you this so you stick with it if you are really sure there is something going on and don't let the doctors poo-poo you into thinking you are overreacting. Good luck. I hope the soy formula solves your problem.

Are you sucking out his nose every couple hours??? The more you mess with it, the more snot and yuck it will produce. You can use the drops without sucking, just spray and leave it. It might help some. I know the more my daughters finger is in her nose, the more buggies start to run and bother her... just a thought!

Also, lots of times new babies sound stuffy, it's them getting use to the air and as long as he is eating fine and happy, I wouldn't worry much about it!

try a humitifier. DB is 4mo and is still stuffy quite a bit but not sick at all. Dr said use the nose drops and cool mist. Seems to help a lot. He really sounds pretty normal but worry is a new mom's job!!!!!

Thank you all for your replies. I will try all of your suggestions. He is doing a little better again and has not been around the rabbit for 24 hrs now. I really think we are dealing with an allergy. But here it is nighttime again and I will be a nervous wreck till morning. I admit, I set my alarm to check on him during the night. My DH thinks my hormones are still crazy making me overreact! Hope it gets better soon. Just wondering if any of your children have allergies to animals and at what age it was discovered???

No help with the stuffy nose, but I remember all too well the sleepless nights worrying about DS's breathing. I used to sleep with my head in their basinett I was so worried about them not breathing...............UNTIL I got a monitor like this: http://www.angelcare-monitor.com/english/hispeed/angelcare.html

It says it doesn't prevent SIDS of course, but it helped my sanity. I found mine at Babies R Us when my DS's were babies---about 6 years ago. I'm sure it's still out there somewhere.

Good luck!!

I know exactly where you are coming from.

My DD had "chronic rhinitis". Her nose was constantly running. Never yellow and thick, just clear and runny.

We were referred to an allergist. Everyone had told me that allergists wouldn't skin test until 2 years of age, well, this allergist skin tested my 10 month old. The Dr. told us that she didn't have any allergies and gave us 5 prescriptions. (We didn't fill any of them).

She ultimately outgrew it.

I highly doubt it is an allergy (i.e. to the rabbit) as there hasn't been enought exposure. For example, before your body will react to seasonal allergies you would need 2 seasons of exposure (which is why most allergists will not test prior to 2 years of age).

Infants have exteremly small nasal passages and almost all infants I know sound stuffy. I would stop with the sucking (do you know in Europe it's virtually unheard of to suck a babies nose? It's just not done there and their babies are just fine) and add some moisture to the air via a cool mist humidifier or a vaporizor. I prefer vaporizors in the winter as it raises the humidity faster and also keeps the room warmer. However, be careful where you place it since it is hot steam and can burn/scald if touched.

Again, this is JMO.

First of all BIG HUGS to you and your little man...and Congratulations!!!
Sometimes this is just their little bodies still adjusting to the outside world.
You can irritate his little nose the more you use the sucker, so watch that.

Remember- babies are nose breathers- meaning that they will sound stuffy and 'snorkly' and really not have ANYTHING wrong. if they really could not breathe they would be extremely irritable and crying to clear their nose,
If it makes you feel better you can suck his/her nose out, but usually they don't need it.
Eventually they will probably 'grow' out of it when they start breathing through their mouth as well.

:thumbsup2

It's probably because the air in your house is dry because you have the heat on and it's winter. It happens to everyone just about. Just use some saline drops in his nose and don't suck anything out unless he's full of boogers. Do you have forced hot air for heat? That seems to be the most drying. We have baseboard but still had to do the saline drops with the kids. Keep a humidifier running as well. I wouldn't stress too much. Just keep up with the saline and he should be fine. Congrats on your little bundle of joy!princess:

My DD was really stuffy like that too - she had the tiniest little nose. DS was never stufy and his nose was normal size - so it really does vary from child to child. If you are worried about the sleep situation, make sure there is plenty of venalation. In a crip for example, no bumper pads they are just for show for a newborn anyway. We had DD in a co sleeper next to me for 9 months. The sides of the cosleeper are mesh, verses a basinette that has solid sides. I just feel like they get fresh air that way. They can fit in the cosleeper longer so you can be right there next to them to check on them! As for checking on your baby - I say follow your instincts! Don't let your husband or anyone else tell you otherwise. I don't know how instincts work but trust yourself first - I'm always glad that I did. The doctor doesn't know your child like you do.

Good luck - and make sure to take care of yourself too!

I'm not sure it would be the rabbit. My son's pediatrician said allergies to animals, don't show up until the child is at least two. My son was stuffy a lot and I thought he was allergic to our cat. He seemed to outgrow it some, but he is now 3 and still gets stuffy on occasion, especially at night. We use a humidifier or a mister when he gets like that. make sure you don't keep his room too warm either. HTH

DD#2 was really stuffy like this when she was a few weeks old and she sounded horrible..The dr. assured me that this was all normal and he told me to keep her slightly elevated in her bassinet, keep a humidifier on, use the little noses and use the nose sucker thingy once every 4 hours..I did that and with a few days she was all cleared up. In the process of all this she also got a blocked tear duct so we had to put ointment in her eyes for that as well.

Our pedi said it was not a cold or allergies but all of the new lint filled clothes that newborns have. It irritates their little nose because everything they have is brand new. Just wash everything a few more times or don't because it won't hurt anything. Your baby will not stop breathing because of a stuffy nose. Babies are mostly mouth breathers anyway which is why you hear that rattling noise all night. It's not that they can't breath. So don't suck his nose unless it is really necessary. If you use a humidifyer or a vaporizer make sure you clean it good everyday and also make sure the room doesn't get too warm. Much greater chance of SIDS from that than a runny nose.

Not that it's a bad thing but your dh is probably right that your hormones are still out of wack. Try to take it easy. Putting dh on duty always helped me to worry less.

My grandson has reflux and often has a runny nose too. His pediatrician says the runny nose is common with reflux disease in infants. Does your baby spit up a lot? That was our first indication of reflux. It's very common and treatable and is usually outgrown within a few months. Just a possiblity I thought I'd share.

It helped my daughter a great deal to have the humidifier on in her room whenever she was sleeping and to use saline drops in her nose once a day.

I am greatful to all who responded...I am using saline and also Littlenoses decongestant as the doctor advised too. When Andy was just a few days old they said he had reflux, not b/c he spit up, but b/c he would spit formula out his nose. He was never congested then, and has stopped spitting from his nose, but now that I think of it, maybe it is still coming up a little into his passageway and just not fully out the nose?? He is doing well now, but here we are nighttime again. i hate nights!!! Please say a prayer for me tonight that I can calm down a bit and rest too. Thank you!

:grouphug: take a nice shower with the baby. We did this all the time. they hardly ever took a bath. Loved being held in the shower. Warm water and steam. :grouphug:

My son was also very congested as a new born. Our doctor thought it was a milk protein allergy. We switched him to a soy formula, that was also free of the protein, it was called isomil in Canada, not sure they have that brand in U.S.(Was adopted so I was not breast feeding.) Anyways, it made a difference. He also spit up alot and had alot of gas until we switched him. The problem with it was it's like chalk, by 4 months he stopped eating. We switched him back to reg formula and no problems this time. I think he just needed his digestive system to mature abit, he was 4 weeks premature. As the previous posters have said we also elevaated his mattress and used a humidifer. I have three kids and with each one I think I worried more! now they are 8,5 and 4 and I still worry, just different ones! Mother hood is wonderful though and the rewards are great! Good luck with your new little one! Enjoy every second it goes way to quick!
