Newbies: Don't be afraid of Mission Space

Does age have anything to do with how well you do?

I'm a 40 yr old Mom and I did fine on it last fall. My 13 yr old son refused to try it, but when he heard I did fine he felt like a wimp. :rotfl: He will for sure be trying it next time.

Please make yourself try it-it's not so bad. I thought it was a fun experience. I probably wouldn't eat prior to riding though!! :confused3

I think it depends on the individual, but I made the mistake of going through the Coca-Cola exhibit and ingesting carbonated drinks. I was so sick after this ride, that I spent the rest of the evening in the hotel. :rotfl:

I was so nervous before riding M:S last June, but was determined to ride it.... I get motion sick easily-- can't read in the car or even ride in the back seat-- and spinning rides are definitely OUT.

I rode a little hokey ride with my dd, then about 4, at a local amusement part a couple of years ago (probably about the same caliber as DUMBO!!!) and it did me in for hours!!!

But... as I said, I was determined to ride this ride. I took Bonine before going to Epcot, and followed the directions to the letter (eyes open, straight ahead, etc...)

I did great! No sick feelings, whatsoever. The most I had was that "floppy" stomach feeling you get when you go down a hill in a car quickly, but it was just for a second, or two.

BTW-- my dh and dd6 also loved the ride, as did the "extra" teenage single rider that was stuck making our foursome. I was nearly more nervous with the thought that I might end up puking on this poor strange guy, since I was sitting between him and my dd!!! :rotfl2: HS

Our family really enjoyed this ride. I think a lot of folks have been scared off by all the hype, because it can be a walk on when Test Track has a 60 minute wait. I talked to someone who said that they've toned down the ride since it first opened. You don't have a "spinning" feeling at all. The only thing is that they talk about motion sickness so much in the pre-show that you can feel a bit sick just by suggestion. But give it a try - it's a good ride.

I rode it during the soft opening   Got the t-shirt and that's it for me!!

How can it NOT have a spinning feeling to it when the ride itself is just that...spinning. :confused3 Could it be calmed down? Sure, why not I guess.

If you have never gotten motion sickness that's a good thing. Do not discount all of us that are susceptible to motion sickness. It aint mind over matter and it isn't just due to the power of suggestion.

It's a ride that can legitimately make you ill if your prone to it! I would never suggest people go on this ride without the disclaimer hence the pre-boarding warning.

This from someone that has been motion sickness her whole life (boats, ships, riding in cars) and can hurl after the tea cups in the MK! :earseek:

i went on it this trip in june, and had no problem, it was really awesome in fact. i felt a little bit dizzy when i got off, but it went away by the time i got outside. i did notice that the 3 other people in my "ship" were getting ill during the ride, and saw a few other people laying on the grass outside of mission space looking very sick too.

I too followed all the rules.I didn't" feel "the spinning but my stomache must have!! Anyway, I made good use of two bags and felt fine afterwards.Would I do it again? We'll find out if I give in to the pressure from my family in Sept. When did they tone it down--after sept 2004?

I have ridden the "toned down" ride also and felt quite sick afterwards. Actually, I was doing okay until the landing at Mars part.... Even though "you" can't tell your spinning, the fluid in your inner ears can tell and that is what makes some people sick. I followed the instructions to a T - kept my head back the entire time and my eyes glued on that video screen - didn't even take my eyes off to press those stupid buttons - I was absolutely comatose - surprised they didn't stop the ride thinking I was dead inside that capsule! LOL!

Bottom line is it doesn't matter that you can't *feel* yourself spinning, the fact is you ARE spinning & you run the risk of getting sick if you are very prone to motion sickness.

We all loved it on our recent trip. I am extremely prone to motion sickness, so much that I sometimes feel ill after just a few metres in a car or train, always have been this way. My mother still tells people that she never arrived anywhere with a clean dress when I was young!

But I am a total coaster & ride fanatic and never seem to have a problem at all, not sure why though.

Anyway I agree there is nothing to fear, we rode about 30 times during the 2 weeks with no ill effects! So many people were skipping it because of the things they had heard rather than trying for themselves and missing one of WDWs very best!

I rode with DH33, me 31, DD8 and DS9. No one got sick. Everyone loved it. DH and DD wanted to go again right away. DS wanted to do other stuff. I felt a little tired out...it was a rush...you know the slight fatigue you feel after feeling a rush of adrenalin? That's how I felt. I also had a slight headache, but I think I had that coming before we got on...can't attribute it to MS.

That being said, we are trying it again in less than 9 days!

Well, DH and I both got sick on this ride. We had to go back to our hotel and sleep it off. Never again but I am glad I tried it. I took dramamine about 1/2 hour before the ride too, didn't help me. DS12 loved it and it didn't effect him at all. DD10 was a little off for about 15 minutes and then was fine. DS10 didn't go on it at all since he gets car sick pretty easily.

OK I CAN'T do teacups anymore. As people age, the inner ear can secrete a hormone that changes how spinning is perceived by the brain. And I LOVED Tilt-a-whirls when younger. However, I can do M:S at least twice in a row without getting sick. The second time I feel a bit off, but riding Test Track puts me back right as rain. Now DH could ride M:S forever. Poor guy, I hold him back.

So I encourage people to try the ride. Maybe it'll be a once in a lifetime experience, but you can say you did it. I know it's the closest I will come to lifting off--what a thrill!

I have to say we did not enjoy Mission Space at all. I know many people do, but for us it was awful. I NEVER get sick on rides or motion of any kind and I had to try really hard to keep it in on this ride. It took us by surprise and we won't be trying it again. Just be aware that it is very different than other rides and VERY intense.

I was also wondering if they toned it down. I rode it when it first opened and hated it! I felt dizzy for an hour or so afterward and a little nauseas. DH loved it though and so I gave it a second try (very reluctantly!) last month and I loved it! I was so worried about "lift off" but it was over before I knew it, with hardly any of the spinning feeling I remembered from the first time.
