Newbie with Golf Cart/Towing Question

Hi Been lurking here on the boards for a few weeks now. I've been over on the cruise boards for about 6 months (Oct. 2010 Magic) but just found you guys!!

Anyway, all of our trips to WDW have been to FW in our TT. DH is happy I found this because he says he can "relate" to the FW thread

OK, we have a question regarding a golf cart. We'd love to get our own, but DH is afraid of the weight/pulling capacitiy of his truck. He has an 04 Ram 1500 with rear suspension airbags, upgraded exhaust, and super chip

So, our TT weighs in at 7000 dw (30' with slide) and the truck without upgrades can tow max 8500 lbs. What are your thoughts on putting a golf cart in the bed of the truck while pulling the camper (because I don't think I can keep up driving all the way down to Florida following him in the cart )

Anyone have any advise on this? DH says it MIGHT be possible if I didn't carry, ahem, 1000 lbs of BS in the camper

From your description it sounds like you will be overloaded, especially on the GWVR....don't know about the GCVWR. The airbags will help with driveability. I would pay close attention to the load rating of the truck tires. Most 1/2 ton truck come with load range C or D tires. D's may be sufficient, although I would want E's for that load. Hot road temps, highway speeds, and overloading is a sure way to blow a tire.

Edit: If you have a CAT scale nearby it would be nice to load up the rig and get the individual axle weights.

with the right tires he should be able to put the gcart a basic cart only weighs 700-900# in the bed and tow the trailer

but you can always trade it in for a chevy 2500

Keep in mind the upgrades to the truck do not change your towing capacity or payload. Is your golf cart gas or electric? There is a big weight difference between the two. You should take it to the scales to get the weight also.

This is just my own opinion, but I wouldn't pull that size camper in the first place. I asked a lot of questions on the RV.net boards before we bought our camper. Just because a truck "can" pull a TT doesn't mean it "should" pull a TT.

I have a 3000 lbs pop up and a lifted electric cart. I put the cart, and what ever else I can fit into the bed of the truck. My truck takes it down the road with out any problems, but I don't think it would like it if I upgraded to a 7000 lbs trailer. As it was I had to use a hitch that raised my ball up becasue the cart lowers the back of the truck so much.

My truck is a 2000 1500 chevy Z71 with the 5.3 engine and factory tow package.

We have been on the road for years and have seen alot of stupid things and yes you could prob tow it but could you STOP it and still maintain control just this weekend we saw a Trailblazer towing a 26-28 TT my brother inlaw is state trooper and can show you plenty of wreck photos of people trying to haul to much trailer/load for there vehicle. I would think long and hard about it would I do it if I HAD to yes if I had the money I would trade up to a 3/4ton just my thoughts and we are a DODGE family all of our trucks have been RAMs... CUMMINS in my motorcoach Cummins in my truck HEMI in my other truck

So, won't be adding a golf cart to the fleet anytime soon Thanks for all the quick replies. We were just playing around with the idea and I think we've definitely nixed it. The truck really doesn't have a problem with the trailer (we've gone all over, including 7 trips to FW) but it's not worth the risk to the family just to add a golf cart

We'll just continue to bicycle around or just rent one for the upcoming trip...it really can be a pain to wait on those buses

You don't have to rent one form disney. They are priced higher then some of the other companies out there. Look around this board and you will find alot of posts about carts.

Naughty, Naughty. Someone's been getting incorrect information from the RV.NET weight police.

Upgrades to the truck Can and Do change the capacities of the truck. Just changing the tires to Load range "E" or changing the rear end gear to a lower gear will change the capacity of the truck. What they DO NOT change are the numbers written on the STICKER inside the door of the truck. This sticker is the biggest mental block of the weight police.

Now that being said. I think you may be pushing the capacities of that Year, Make and Model truck combined with the trailer. One of the New 1/2 tons would handle it just fine though.

I think you would be way overloaded. Check the capacity of the TV, add about 1000 pounds to the TT, add weight for pasengers in the TV and I'd bet you are at or over the limits
