We are taking our first trip, totally new to the pin trading idea. :confused3 I've just read the information on pin trading, of course, after I went on the hunt for pins. Yes, I didn't realize that the pins have to be Disney so now I have a whole bunch of pins from our country/province/city. I understand that CM won't trade these pins for Disney pins, nor would I expect anyone else to now that I realize what this particular pin trading is all about. I've ordered the Disney pin starter sets. :woohoo:

I'm wondering if my children could gift one of the "unacceptable" pins to a "friend" (child) they meet while waiting for a show/line or is that totally tacky? I will discuss the trading etiquette with them prior to doing this so they aren't expecting anything in return with these particular pins.

Well...they can always "gift' a pin..
and...no matter what the pin is...
a gift..with no strings..is NEVER tacky...;)
and..you will be adding to...The magic.

I think your child could 'gift' a pin to another child, but you (the adult) should approach that child's adult so that they understand that your son/daughter isn't expecting to be given a pin in return.

Absolutely. My children are both on the shy side and more than likely wouldn't initiate any conversation with children unless we are speaking to the adults and they see that it is "okay". We would be very clear that there are no expectations to receive a pin back. Before I even knew this pin trading existed, my dh suggested we buy a few little things (not just pins) from here that our children could give kids that they meet. Just never know where someone might be coming from.

How many pins you start with varies based on how much your child enjoys trading. For instance, our family of 4 can easily trade up to 200 pins over a long (3-4 day) weekend. I always try to have at least 25 traders per person minimum. BUT we are also experienced traders and do it a lot so depending on your kids ages maybe 10-20 would be good to start.
And yes, if we were in line together and your child wanted to gift a pin to my child we would happyily accept, however I do agree that you should speak with the parents to make sure they know that it is a gift and no pin is expected in return. :)

Thank you. I am still considering if we will bring along those "other" pins. I ordered 40 pins and am going to try to order another 20 or so. I have a question regarding the lanyard. How much do these cost in Disney without pins? Will any kind work or should they be a specific style?

You can buy lanyards in the parks for around 6 bucks...
wait till you get to the park to buy them...
as..there are so many to choose from and your kids will have a great time picking one out.
