Newbie to Discounts - How do they work?

Hi, everyone! Need some info here. We have been on several WDW trips, but usually stay at Shades of Green with a friend. So I don't really have experience using discount codes.

Can you give me some basic info about how they work? Are they specific to a person (is that what a "pin code" is?)? Are there discounts available to the general public, or people who are members of organizations like AAA?

We're going to stay at AoA the last week of February, 2014. What's the best way to approach the whole discount thing?

There are a couple of sticky threads with all kinds of discount info at the top of this forum. They should answer most of your questions. Just a warning tough, if you are staying in a standard LM room at AoA, a discount will be extremely unlikely.
