I am on pinpics right now. I am looking around trying to get familiar with everything to do with pins. I was just wondering on some pins I see that it says retired. What does that mean? I can guess what it means, but why are those different from the other pins. Also the pins have numbers by them. Pin #17 or whatever. 17 of what? & does anybody know the very first pin ever released? Thanks for your help. Cristen

retired is simple... It is a word used in most colleactables when a piece is no longer for sale or made. They call it retired. The number next to the pin is just the the number it is assigned when it is added to the data base. #17 is the 17th pin added to pinpics. As for the first pin released or made.. Well some of these pins are over 40 years old so I am not sure if anyone will ever know the first one released.... Hope this helps. :)

Hi Cristin!
Welcome to the world of Disney pins and to the Collectors Board!

Pinpics is a wonderful resource. The numbers given to pins are of no signifigance to the pin itself, only indicating when it was added to the Pinpics Database. Pin #17 was the 17th pin added. Because the pins are posted on there by folks like you and I, there is no real order. However you can do searches based on several different factors. You click on the SEARCH and it shows a page allowing you to enter a number. If you go to the CONTINUE button on the bottom of that page, that will take you to the page where you can check off specifics you wish to find.

As for the first pin released. Difficult to determine. Disney has been releasing pins since way way back.

Nat....you stinker.....you beat me to it! Didn't you hear me typing my response? hehehehhee

Thanks for your help. I figured retired meant that, but I wasn't aware that pins are continuosly sold. So if they release a pin a year ago, it can still be bought somewhere until it is retired. I thought they only release a pin for a short time, then it is gone. Or only release so many then you are on your own to find it.
I didn't realize that they have been making pins for a long time. I thought this was pretty new. How can tell the older ones from the newer? Thanks again.

Well as with most things Disney the stamp on it helps with age...

In 2000 most pins were backed with the 2000 logo and since then the year has been on the back of most. Some of the older ones will have walt disney productions on them and some will just say Disney. But for the most part the new ones all have the officila pin trading logo on them with the year they were made... Some pins will have different backs as they are or have been made at different times. Disney has a habbit of making a pin that has not been around for a while again. They made a pin with Figment on it for a long time with the words Epcot Center on it... Well they made it again in 2000 with the 2000 back stamp... Even though they no longer called Epcot "Epcot Center" anymore... As for good resources on pins... Well pin pics is good as is the Tomart pin guide. It can be gotten at WDW and online at tomart.com
