Hi all, I have pretty much convinced my wife for us to buy into dvc. We go to the world about every two years and have gone through the dvc tours. Going out and spending 16k for the initial 160 points is more then I can spend right now as I don't want to have to take a loan out for this. So I have a couple questions about buying a resale and if yall think this would work for us. What id like to do is buy a small contact of 50-75 points(bank and borrow would give us what we need) at HH. We are still a young family and dont really see ourselves using that resort for another 12-15 years. For the years before we would use HH is it going to be hard for us to go to the world with only the 7 month window? And if we chose to buy points from Disney at that point would we have to buy enough to get us up to the 160 or could I have a resale contact of 50 and then get 50 from Disney? Thanks

very few posters here would recommend this. it can work but most would see it as too risky.

see this thread for similar opinions on the VB resort. points are cheaper at offsite resorts for a reason...if you don't want to stay there, don't take the risk of buying there, IMO.

if you're happy just to be onsite at wdw, buy SSR or OKW. seriously.

no, you wouldn't have to hit the 160 minimum. (at the moment anyway...DVC is starting to change some of their rules for add-ons with BLT).

but right now, you can buy a 50 pt resale contract and still add-on directly for as few as 25 pts (or 27 or 46 or whatever) if you are paying cash.

I would caution against buying a resale at HHI if you want to primarily go to WDW. The HHI points will be cheaper to purchase, but you will pay far more in annual fees over the life of your contract. And depending on when you want to travel and where you really want to stay, you might have trouble with the 7 month window.

If you do buy a resale, you can add on through Disney at any time for any amount as long as it is over 25 points. (Some caveats - you have to buy 50 points to get financing, and you will soon only be able to add a minimum of 100 points at Bay Lake Tower.) You do not have to add up to 160.

If you really plan on going to WDW and not HHI, buy something at WDW. Both OKW and SSR have lower point costs with reasonable dues. And you can usually get a smaller contract resale. PLUS!! both are really nice resorts, so it wouldn't be terrible if you had to stay there.

I'm in the same boat as you Brow (ie looking at buying a resale to get into dvc) and was considering VB of HH, however the more I think about it to more it makes sense to pay up and get something at one of the WDW resorts.

We're a family of 4, (me, DW, DS 5, and DD 2 months), my wife and I love WDW and our son is starting to catch the fever (although thru 2 trips he's only been on about 10 rides !) so we're looking into buying DVC.

Initially the thought of buying 100 pts @ VB or HH for roughly the same amount of money as 50-75 at say OKW or SSR sounds good, until a few years down the line when you're kids get older and you may not want to pull them out of school for a trip and therefore need to book something during a busier period.

I know that if I bought at VB or HH now and was still able to get a ressie at BCV or VWL at 7 months I'd feel like I'm a genius saving that money and having the extra points, that is until I want to book a trip at Spring Break in 5 years and can't get anything at WDW with my points because it's all booked.

Just my two cents, but for what it's worth you're not alone in trying to figure out what to do. Unfortunately, there's a good reason that VB and HH are much cheaper than the other resorts (ie they're not at WDW), and for that reason I've pretty much decided that if I take the plunge it will definitely be owning at one of the WDW resorts. Can still get a pretty good deal/discount buying at OKW, SSR, AKL, and VWL, finding 50 pt contracts at reasonable prices.

Hope this helps,

Chris
