Newbie question about expiring points

I'm brand new to DVC and am currently under contract for a Dec UY resale that has banked 2019 points that will expire at the end of November, 2021. We are not the owners yet, so we can't book anything this summer to use up those points, and the fall calendars are already full, so I doubt there will be any availability anywhere once the points are ours. That will also cut out renting the points to anyone else - since there won't be anywhere for renters to book either.

So, my question is what can we do with these points? Is a transfer to RCI the only option? Or else are they just going to be wasted? They are resale, so we can't book a cruise or anything else with them. I'm assuming that Disney won't let us use them for a trip next year - even if we book it before they expire.

I know all of this is hypothetical because the points aren't even ours yet - but I want to be ready when/if the sale is completed. TIA!

DVC will not extend the expiration of those banked 2019 points into your Dec 2021 UY. As a resale owner, your only option will be RCI if you don't want to rent them.

If RCI is not to your liking, you might be able to rent them out for single nights at fire sale prices. I recently posted banked Dec UY points at $12 apiece and they went in one day. Since you likely did not pay dues on those 2019 points, the out of pocket cost to you for those points is a fraction of what you paid for the whole contract.

Thank you so much!

If you are flexible with your travel dates, you'll probably be able to pick up some nights before expiration. Plans change - people reschedule or cancel. It all depends on how much effort you want to put into it.

Use the rent/trade board to offer the rental of the points. May have to find more than one person to rent points out or possibly add a few points to make the rental(s) work. Takes some effort, but it will keep the points from just expiring and not recoup anything.

Similar boat here- except the points belong to my mother in law and they expire at the end of this July. This seemed to be news to her (sigh) as I don’t think she really pays that much attention to the details.

I thought about trying to help her rent them but I’ve never done that and there isn’t much time to figure it out. The idea of wasting 154 points pains me......

We live several hours away from Orlando and work full time, so we aren’t super flexible with travel dates - but that being said, I would rather take a spur of the moment trip than lose the points! I’m more concerned with the fall calendars not having days strung together. I wouldn’t mind a split stay, but it looks like most days are already gone at most resorts with only one day here and one day there available. I think renting the points will probably be a good option. I didn't think about people only needing one night bookings since those wouldn’t work for me.

You could reserve one or two nights here and there during the Oct/Nov period and combine them with off-site stays if you want to use the points yourself.

That's a good idea, and I’ll definitely look into it! 😊

Oh no! That’s not much time at all to figure it out. I would transfer them to RCI before I just let them expire. You could always use them to book an RCI Orlando hotel off-property. That’s one of the things I’ve been thinking about.

Is there a deadline to transfer to RCI? Is if just pre expiration?

45 days before expiration. At one time, you could transfer later than that but they were really restricted. I think I read that is no longer even an option.

But I don’t use RCI so only know for sure about the 45 day rule.

Sorry, DVC has a block on RCI resorts within 30 (maybe 50) miles of WDW. You can't use DVC points to reserve RCI Orlando resorts. You'd have to book farther away.

OP, try RCI resorts Daytona area, etc. 30-50 miles away can give you a nice vacation. Just forget about parks for this trip.

"We are not the owners yet, so we can't book anything this summer to use up those points, and the fall calendars are already full,"

Don't give up so easily!!!! Availability changes multiple times during the day when you consider all the resorts. We just had to cancel a trip and have many points to use before November 30, so I've checked availability frequently in the last few days and have seen all sorts of availability come and go. Granted, certain resorts have had little change, but others have had 3-5 consecutive nights become available. And I've only been looking for 3 days.
Glad you're considering a split stay.......that can increase your odds. Also consider booking a villa larger than what you think you need --- if you're in danger of losing the points anyway, what do you have to lose. Big warning ----- HOWEVER ------ once you get a larger villa, it's very difficult to go back to a smaller one. :-)
We quickly realized that, for us, size is the real luxury.

Edited to add: Our points are in Holding and can only be booked within 60 days of check-in, and I've just got a room for mid-August, so that's not too far out. Will do a split stay and add the second room in a few days, when our 60 day window opens.

You don't necessarily have to transfer a block of points into RCI to use the points in RCI. A few times we have found where we wanted to stay then called DVC and asked them to book the RCI resort using DVC points. They use just the points required.

Can resale points be used for Concierge Collection? I'm sure someone on here will know. Since the points are "use them or lose them", you could stay in an over-the-top nice resort for a weekend. Or luxury hotel in DC or New York.

I’ve had a great deal of success renting out distressed (soon to expire) points right here on Disboards. I had no shortage of takers at $9.50 per point and probably could have gotten a bit more. It involves a bit of work checking availability and replying to inquiries, but it’s better than letting them expire.

Availability changes all the time. Don't assume that you won't be able to find something to book either this summer or fall.

…and you might get lucky with RCI. We are flying home today from an RCI exchange at the Hilton Sunrise Lodge in Park City. Very nice 2BR unit, great location, and a wonderful environment for hiking/biking/rafting/etc. It is an easy (flat!) walk from the resort to the Canyons Village. It would be even better in the winter for a ski family; there is a ski lift just outside the resort in addition to the easy access to the Village. The Canyons side is probably a bit better for intermediate (and beyond) skiers, but still…not too shabby!
