newbie Q - what is meant by "bracketing?"

It's when you shoot a picture, and then the camera shoots two more, one overexposed and one underexposed usually set to a variable.
 
I like bracketing! On most of the DSLRs you can set the camera to take several different combinations of parameters. While you can change shutter, f/stop and exposure value. The most common practice is to shoot three shots with one exposure under the metered value and one above.
