I read somewhere on another disboard that you can get cheaper pins to start kids to trade with? My DS6 was getting into it when we left WDW in Feb and he wants to do it again when we go in Dec but I can't afford to buy him $5 and up pins to trade. :goodvibes DH wants to do it too.

So I am was looking on ebay and there are lots of pins but they don't all look authentic to trade with?

What do I need to ask to make sure they are authentic? :thumbsup2

Any other tips would be appreciated too!

TIA!

Someone suggeste Dizpins.com to me as a place to try and sell some pins. Maybe you could look there? And, no, i haven't listed any yet!

I would also like any information you all might have on getting traders for less than rack prices...it seems silly to spend $6.95 for each trade!

I just posted this same topic earlier on another board. Please share tips with me also. My boys are 5/8 and aren't into the collectible thing they just want to trade and so I would like to find some inexpensive pins so they can have 5-10 each. I looked at the disney store online and they were pretty pricey for this purpose and I don't have a disney store to close by (90miles)

I just got back from WDW and this was the first time i focuse my time on pins. I got some suggestions from some people about buying a lot of the infamous 2000 dancer pins of ebay for around 2 buck apiece. I thought about but could not bring myself to it because every cast lanyard has at least one of those ugly things compliments of pin sharks. I wend a little bit more and for about 3 bucks per pin I bought a lot of 40 tradable pins of a seller on ebay. When i got them I looked them over and double checked pinpics.com to make sure they were tradeable. every one of them were tradeable and in great condidtion. My DW and I had a blast trading. You may want to try that but stay away from the 2000 dancer pins if you can, they are getting very hard to trade from what I saw.

Hi
I recently started a pin collection also, actually I have a Disney everything collection but pins are the newest addition.
I buy most of my pins on Ebay from a couple of different sellers but this one in particular has great prices and low combined shipping.
Not only that the fastest shipping I have ever seen! usually within 2 days of payment.

The seller ID is jhayes0610

She has some high end priced pins too but many 99 cent auctions.
Hope this helps you out!

You could also try Mousepinsonline.com they have some nice trader packs and I have had no problem with trading them. Going again in a few weeks with a bag full and I will see if that has changed.

I would caution newbies only IF they are buying pins that they might want to trade with anyone other than a cast member. Although cast members will trade any Disney pin for any Disney pin (clearly marked Disney on the back of the pin), many folks who start trading with CM's often get interested in pins altogether. Some pins, like Sedesma or Propins, aren't as trade-able with anyone other than CM's, usually. I think even Disney is not as happy with some of the other pin companies out there, as the quality is not the same as a Disney pin, purchased from a Disney park at some point.

But you also have to think to yourself that if you are trading for a Cast Lanyard pin, say...don't you want to put something back on that lanyard for someone else to trade for? I began pin trading to collect pins...so I try to put something on the lanyard I take from that someone else would want to trade for at some point. I'm really tired of seeing some of the lanyards with just, well, junk on them. It's really disappointing.

So...just be careful what you buy. If you are buying a bunch of junk pins...would you want to get that pin off a lanyard one day?

Not saying any link provided in the above replies is selling "junk" - per se. Just something to think about.

Purchase from where you want to purchase from. Just an idea if you want to save some money, but you will get an elitist attitude from lots of folks if you try to trade these pins. Just enjoy it for what it's worth. If you are looking to trade and don't want to spend lots of money on pins, then I will say again mousepins was fine. They gave my daughter a chance to trade multiple pins without breaking the bank. If this is something you really want to get into well then spend away on other pins and trade.

Just enjoy, but remember isn't it always better to buy low sell high? Using propins for a cast lanyard is a prime example of this.

I guess I look at it from the long run. Don't we all want pin trading to be around for as long as possible? If so, then it is best to stay away from the cheap (propins, Sedesma) pins because that can be discouraging to other pin traders. With the way things are right now, IMHO, it is well worth the extra 50 cents to 1 dollar to buy some non-Sedesma/Propins pins and have something worth trading with CMs. This helps the entire hobby and ensures that continues to be around.

I picked up a real nice pin lot from e-bay about 25 LE pins some a bit older 2002/2003 at about $2.50 a pin .

I then thought these are better then most we have seen on CM's lanyards so I went to a pin party and traded about half there.

So in two weeks some CM's lanyards are going to be getting some real nice pins .Some still in original packageing so the will go in their pockets for special trades.DD recieved a few for her B-day in Oct.

We only collect what we like Mine Pirates & NBC ,DD is Tink all the way.

But if you keep looking you can find some nice lots cheap.

The problem I see with the whole Propin/Sedesma thing is that Disney licensed them so if they want them off the market they should pull them from each cast lanyard each day and replace them with pins they want "in" the market. It is not my responsibility to police what pins trade and what don't. In fact my daughter likes some of the Propins, they are much better then sedesma if that is saying anything.

Propins have not been made for a few years. That company was German and did not renew their license with Disney I would guess about 3 years ago. Those pins use to sell for approx $19 for a nine pin set. And you get what you pay for. The Spain pins are even less, and make Propins look good quality. :rotfl2:
I have some of each in my collection. Most collectors do. But you just have to know they are what they are -- cheap pins.
Most Cast lanyards have the 2000 black background dancers on their lanyards. Due to this alone they often will not accept those pins in a trade with a guest. They are not suppose to have two of the same pin on their lanyard.
Agree, pay the little extra money and trade pins you won't feel bad about. :thumbsup2 You trade off what gets traded on.

I guess if my kids are older I would be more concerned about the tradeability of the pin. At the ages of 5/8 I think they'll be more excited to trade 10pins each vs trading 2-3 more expensive pins each. I plan on buying them 1-2 special pins like poc while there if they don't get something they like on trade.

My thoughts exactly and be sure to tell them to look for the green lanyards. Adults can't trade with those individuals.

What are the guidelines for kids pin trading.

1. Disney authorized pins
2. look for green lanyards

Anything else. This will be there first time doing this.

Thanks for the input

If you have time, visit Scoop's Pin Talk - it's usually held Monday, Tuesdays and Wednesday in the MK - go to the building with Tony's restaurant in it - and go all the way to the back...there's a mini theatre in there, and he does a presentation on pin trading, upcoming stuff, etc. If there are lots of new folks there, he may do a mini seminar on how to trade - the does and the don'ts...etc.

Sometimes kids get to pick a pin from his hat - great pins in there! Usually you have to have one to trade...but sometimes not. It's a great time. Lasts about 1 hour.

Don'ts - Make sure your kids know NOT to pull on the lanyards, and try not to poke the pins they want - it hurts the CM's.

If you get your kids one of those name badges they sell on main street, you can get it engraved and put it on the lanyard, so the CM can address them by name...it's more personal that way. You may not want to do this, but it's an option.

Make sure to tell them about surprise pins - those are the ones that are turned around on a lanyard - you don't know what you are getting, so it's a surprise! Some kids really like this....

Tell them to be careful about trading with folks other than CM's. I've had little kids run up to me and yank on my lanyard telling me I had to trade with them...and I'm NOT a CM. It's a little embarrassing, and I can't say I like to be pulled by my lanyard. Make sure the kids know it's a CM they are trading with, not just a mere mortal...although some folks are nice, you can never tell.

That's all I can think of...they really should stick to those green lanyards - they have great stuff on them, and are only for the little ones, so it's a special thing.

Thanks for the advice. I'm sure my oldest will love the surprise pins.

Are there lots of folks with green lanyards or will they be swamped by youngster pin traders?
