Newbie making reservations

I have our welcome home trip reserved for February, but am now thinking April will be a better time for us to travel. I'd like to reserve the April trip before cancelling the February trip. Will that mess anything up with our points? If I do the April trip before cancelling February, we would need to borrow points for the April trip. But the points won't actually be used until we travel, right?

Once you borrow the points, they will be stuck in the UY you are borrowing them into and will expire at the end of the UY. Borrowing is a final transaction.

Points are taken at the time you book the trip and put into the reservation, but if you have to cancel the trip, the points will be returned from you account. What I would do is simply modify the February trip and choose the April dates...this way, you will simply replace what you have and use those points for the new trip.

A welcome home trip is a special thing. I would call them first and ask what they can do. It might be very different than what you see available.

I'd like to reserve the April trip before cancelling the February trip.

Why? You can "modify" a trip online if you're worried about losing one reservation without being able to get the second. Are you trying to hedge your bets by holding two reservations while waiting to decide which to use?
