We just recently bought DVC (the ink hasn't even dried) and are wanting to go down late October. I've been out on the member site and there is nothing available. Could some of the veterans out here explain to me how the waitlist process works? If I waitlist now for an Oct 19th date what happens to the points if I don't get it? Which ones have the best chance to come through for a studio?

Thanks in advance.

I have never waitlisted dates that I didn't already have something booked, like wanting to switch resorts or adding a day or two. When you enter a waitlist they match what you need. Apparently the waitlist won't fill in a day or 2 at a time. Say you need a whole week at BCV in studio it will look for that week. Period. I am currently on a waitlist for 2 days in the middle of a stay and found that 1 of those days became available. I called MS and booked it asap which dropped me to waiting for the 1 day that I still need.

If you don't get the waitlist I don't think anything happens to your points.

If you do waitlist I think your best chances are at SSR, OKW and AKV, in that order. They are the largest and of those 3 probably SSR is your best chance.

nothing.

if they are current pts and your banking window closes on sept 30, they don't get banked unless you drop the waitlist and bank them. but mostly nothing.

First, good luck!

Your best chances of getting a W/L are at one of the bigger resorts, and for shorter rather than longer periods of time..i.e., SSR, OKW or AKV--because they have so many more villas--are most likely to open up. And, one night or two nights are more likely than 3 or 4 or more...

But it's all "luck of the draw"...I've seen/experienced W/Ls come through for smaller resorts, too...

The rules limit you to two active W/Ls at a time, so that make SSR your best bet...there are no views or other booking categories to make your "pool" of possibilities smaller...at AKV, you have to pick between Jambo and Kidani, and several different categories from there (value, standard, savannah, concierge)...and since you can only have two W/Ls, the categories can matter...

Your points don't get used until/unless you W/L comes through...so there's no impact at all on your points unless the W/L comes through...

To maximize your odds, here are some "tricks" you can use:

1. You don't say for how long you wanted to book...if it's "just" a weekend or long weekend, I'd go with SSR, and then OKW (not near HH). If it's a week or so, I'd consider a split stay, and W/L'ing 3 days at one resort and 4 at another...

2. DO snag what you can get now (what's available)...also check the website frequently...openings (especially one or two days) pop up frequently and you may be able to get all (or most) of your dates "in pieces"...don't forget if you wind up with a night or two "missing," you can sometimes book that same room on cash (and then W/L it for points)...

3. Don't worry about turning multiple one or two night reservations into a a single (or just two) reservations just yet...wait til you think you're "done" and then call MS and have them link (e.g., if you get 2 nights at SSR today; another night in two days, and then another 2 nights next week, you can have all 3 of those separate reservations linked once you've "finished")...

Piecing together a reservation (especially this close to arrival, and during Food & Wine, which is a busy time for DVC) can be done, but it takes persistence, some luck, and some knowledge of "the system." If you're ok w/staying at SSR, that's where your best chances are (because of the resort's size)...one bedrooms are easier to get (and twice as expensive!) as studios, so you may be able to get your dates in a one-bed if not in a studio...

Using the website will make it easier than having to call MS...but my best advice would be to book immediately each time you see one of your dates come available!

Good luck!

You have chosen one of the most popular times for members to visit WDW. You might not get anything at all just waitlisting. We waitlisted a SSR two bedroom villa several years ago for mid-Oct and we set up our waitlist at the end of May. It never came through. And two bedrooms are usually a bit easier than studios, but a little more difficult than studios.

If you must go in Oct, you need to make a reservation somewhere and hope a waitlist comes through or you'll be paying for that stay.

Did you buy direct or resale? If you bought direct from Disney, your salesperson should be able to help you make your first reservation.

Thanks for all the tips. I'm gonna go ahead and make a reservation somewhere else but waitlist SSR and AKL (I would rather do OKW, but the wife wants to try somethign else). Keep your fingers crossed. Thanks again.

You should have better luck with a 1BR vs a studio. Resorts that have "lock-off" 2BR's lose both a studio AND a lock-off 2BR out of inventory when a studio is booked. Since the points are significantly more for a 1BR than a 2BR and they have the same (in most cases) occupancy, many folks opt for the studio over the 1BR. This can leave a lot of 1BR's available.

As a PP mentioned, late October is an EXTREMELY popular time, particularly for DVC. IMO, it will be nearly impossible for you to get a studio anywhere at this late in the game.

So that's probably why. :)
Just yesterday I was able to get a 1BR at SSR for 4 nights in a row for Sept 28 til Oct 2. I could not find 1 studio in all of DVC for those nights.
