Usually, when people talk about travel they fly "with Southwest" or "with Air Canada." That is, it seems that both legs of a trip are with the same airline. And that's the way we've done it in the few times in the past that flying has been involved.

This time, though, for our budget and in consideration of arrival and departure times, our best option is to fly into Orlando with Soutwest and to fly back with JetBlue. Before I go ahead and book, and because I overthink everything, and I just wanted to check in with other Canadian travellers - is this something people do? Or is it some sort of weird thing that is going to end up causing a hassle and require a ton of extra explanation when we cross the border into Buffalo?

My most recent trip to Orlando was Air Canada to Orlando and West Jet home. If you can do it cheaper with two one way trips than the price of one roundtrip, go for it.

I don't see any extra explanation required at the border. So long as you don't stay in the states longer than is legally allowed all is good with the border agents.

I'm such a saver bee that I have done this many times lol!
I have that exact same itinerary as you are talking about for our December trip. We are flying down on Southwest and home on JetBlue. Just make sure you understand the policies for the two airlines in terms of cancellation or having to change a flight. They are quite different.

yep, what they said! only one other thing i can think of: it’s a good idea to check baggage policies too, to make sure you’re within the limits for both airlines.

Thanks All. I figured it was something that people must do (JetBlue's arrival-in-Orlando times are terrible!), but we always get the third degree on our itinerary when we cross into Buffalo so I needed the extra reassurance :)

If you flight often from Buffalo as we do, perhaps it should be worth looking into the Nexus program. My Fiancé and I travel out of Buffalo all the time and Nexus makes the border crossing a breeze even with all the changes. Using two different airlines to save money just makes sense. We personally do prefer to stay with JetBlue as we find it easier and convenient to just add the 1st checked bag to the initial airfare.
