Hi!

After reading, and reading, and reading on this board, I'm feeling like doing a little writing, so here I go!

How we started: DH and I always planned to take our 2 to WDW, but never really talked about when. Summers went by, and we went elsewhere while the kids were younger, and in the back of my head was ... wait until they're a little older and easier to travel with and more likely to remember the trip... (while I've been really struck by how people talk about the "magic" of the World, and how families make repeated vacations there, it is quite possible that this may be our one and only trip there, so we wanted to wait until the kids were just a bit older...) Well, a couple of weeks ago, I said to DH, should we go this summer? We'd just been back to his parents (half the country away) last summer, and weren't planning to return to the mid-west until next summer. And we didn't have any other plans yet for family travel this summer. So I suggested that we talk to a AAA rep together and see what they have to offer.... he agreed.

The next thing I know, I'm at work, DH calls me on the cell phone, and he's on the land line with AAA (so he's got a phone in each ear; a two-fisted caller!) making plans for our trip! I'd no idea he was so enthusaistic. :goodvibes He's talking resorts, specific weeks of travel, airline reservations, dining plan, trip insurance, all these details, with me listening in on the other end of the conversation (I can barely hear the AAA rep). I was so surprised at his interest and excitement (cool!)! I end up going next door to check with my Boss about getting a week off in July, and magic poof, that seals the deal, we've started on our Disney Planning! Whee!

So, we booked at the PO-Riverside from July 21 - 28, with the dining plan for DH, J (dd 12) and T (ds 10). On my way home from work I stop by the bookstore to buy a disney planning book, but to hide, because we haven't decided how to tell the kids yet. We knew we weren't going to keep it a secret for long, because we wanted them to enjoy the anticipation. Plus, they've always wanted to go (dd says, "everyone else at school has been to WDW, we need to go!")

Let me introduce us properly. I work at a research firm full time, and have lots of extra home activities (girl scouts, boy scouts, taking children to and from music lessons, nothing everybody else doesn't do!). DH is a grad student finishing up his degree, slowly, so he is also home for the kids a good part of the time. DD, 12, has a wonderful temperament, loves good food, shopping, music, and school. DS, 10, also has a great temperament, although cranky when tired, is a picky eater, we're trying to get him off video games, likes his teachers but just tolerates school, and hates his piano lessons. ;)

After only a day of keeping our secret, we decided to tell the kids over dinner that we were finally going to WDW. DH got them excited by telling them that he had a surprise to tell them, but he couldn't say until I got home from work. So of course they were worked up into a frenzy by the time I got home. They guessed it had to do with vacation, and J was already talking WDW, but DH didn't let on. DH had them guess where we might go for the summer, and they guessed the mid-west again.... no.... a nearby water park.... no..... washington dc..... no..... WDW? "Should we go to WDW, DH?" "I don't know, what do you think, DW?" And by that time, they had it and were very happy with us (how often does _that_ happen!) and with the upcoming trip. :)

Next: I discover the DISboards and the importance of ADRs and make a bunch of 'em!

Hello again!

The house is asleep, there is thunder but no rain outside, the temp is nice and warm, the cat is sitting in the window, I've my cup of coffee :surfweb: ; how peaceful!

Back to my little story. I new there was a danger of getting to the World and just becoming overwhelmed with the size of it all, so I wanted to learn about it as much as possible ahead of time. Off to my trusty computer I went. (I truly believe everything you ever want to know is now on the web.) I had already found the WDW site, and I went back there now, noticed the offer for the free maps -- those look nice and helpful, has anybody gotten them and used them??? -- and some other information.

Knowing that there are bulletin boards on almost every topic imaginable, I googled "disney world bulletin board" and up came this site. I love it here! :yay: What a fountain of information! What nice people! What _great_ pictures of Disney food! yum! My husband is amused that I've spent so much time here reading about Disney ("are you going to become a Disney expert" "you betcha")!

I, and most of my family excepting DS, love good food so one of the first places I visited were the dining review boards. Pencil in hand, I started making lists of posters likes and dislikes in there reviews, and Oh, the pictures. I was starving after 10 minutes every time I started! :goodvibes Found the online menus (did I say this site was great) and checked them out too. Worried after reading how early some of you get your ADRs (took me a bit to figure out what that meant), I figured I better make my reservations with less than 3 months to go. So off to the telephone I went. I had no problem getting what I wanted (whew).

July 21 6:10 California Grill
July 22 5:40 Boma
July 23 6:20 Whispering Canyon
July 24 6:25 Kona Cafe
July 25 6:20 Coral Reef
July 26 7:50 Le Cellier
July 27 4:50 Mama Melrose FDP

I opted for dinner's rather than lunches because the thought of going to the parks on such a full tummy makes me a bit queasy. (I'll be taking dramamine as it is!) And we'll try eating early, fast, granola bar breakfasts in our room, eating early lunches in the parks, and so I went mostly with early dinners so we could have a few hours left in the park (on the overly full tummys!).

More later, I have to start the morning routine and refill the coffee cup!

TGIF!

My poor little sweetie, the DS10, got sent home yesterday with a fever and tummy ache. He was so out of sorts last night; just laying around the house waching TV. He even tried to do his homework with his poor fevered brain (the teacher sent him home with homework?!) and I encouraged him to stop after 15 minutes or so, he looked so pitiful. He feels OK now (still sleeping); he was worried that if he doesn't make it to school today he'll break his perfect attendance record.

And J, DD12, has her flute competition tonight at 7 p.m., somebody think of us and send us a good wish. She's made of firm stuff -- she's been very matter of fact about it; I'd be covered in stage fright. (I hate that performing in front of people :scared1: ). And tomorrow afternoon is her vocal competition! You go girl! :cheer2:

On topic: last night I ordered myself a Passporter and an Unofficial Guide off the internet, delivery in 3-5 days. I'm so excited to see the Passporter. I've seen pictures, and read a couple of people's posts about them here (but not too many; they don't seem all that common). But I like the idea of having one little book to write things down in and carry around. If it is anything remotedly like the planner I use at work, I'll be very happy with it!

I also played with the park maps on the Disney site. Too cool! You select the sites you want to see, they mark them on a map for you, and when you're ready, they send you free maps of each park with your selections marked on them. It takes 2 - 4 weeks, so I should finalize them soon and have them sent.

I feel like I'm writing a diary -- I've never been able to diary or journal for any length of time. Journal-challenged I am! But this is fun and I'll keep it up even if I hear from.... no one! :goodvibes

So you finally heard from some-one:goodvibes Welcome to the DIS!! Its like another language at first but it sounds like you're doing well deciphering all the codes, and you must be a smart girl cos you already figured out ADRs, and got everything you wanted, well done:cheer2: You made some great choices. Dinners were very wise, its so hot in the summer that it totally kills your appetite if you eat too early. Have you heard about the fantasmic Dinner Package yet or did you decide against it? Any info you need ask away here and someone will help you.

Poor DS(darling son), hope he gets better soon, and good luck to DD (darling daughter)for tonight:wizard: Thought i would translate abbreviations till you get used to them.
Great start:thumbsup2

What is the Fantasmic Dinner Package???! We are on the dining plan, which I am very impressed with....

Fantasmic is the night time show at Disney MGM Studios. It incorporates water screens, tons of characters, and a storyline that has Mickey overcoming the disney villians, there are fireworks, water effects, fire effects, its a spectacular, and it finishes off every night at MGM. Some people wait up to 2 hours to get a good seat.

With the dining package, you book a dinner at MGM in one of 3 restaurants, hollywood and Vine buffet. Mama melrose italian, or Hollywood Brown derby find dining. You can phone disney dining and say you want to book the fantasmic dining package. the first 2 restauramts are 1 credit each on your dining plan, and Brown derby is 2 credits. if you do this, you have pre-allocated seating for the show, and you only have to go maybe 45 minutes before the show instead of 1 1/2 to 2 hours, so it can incorporate the disney dining plan, its not a new one. as you are going in July i highly recommend booking this deal if fantasmic figures in your plans at all.

Hope i haven't confused you more,

Claire -- thanks so much for the information! I'll look into these restaurants and see if I can get a reservation that would hook us up for the show; it sounds like fun!

And thanks for asking about the DChildren. DS woke up this morning with a sore throat but no fever, so off to school he went, intact perfect attendance. And we just got home from DD's flute comp; that went well she said. Now she just has the vocal one tomorrow afternoon!

I got an e-mail saying that my Passporter and Unofficial Guide have now been shipped from the warehouse and should arrive at my doorstep next Friday. I'll be impatiently awaiting them!

Happy Mother's Day to all you moms out there!

Thank you Claire-- after reading some reviews and looking at the menu for Mama Melrose's (yum), I switched 'Ohanas on our last night to the FDP at Mama's. Although I felt emotional attached at this point to all my ADRs, 'Ohanas was one that I read more conflicting reviews on, we're not all that big meat eaters (and we'll get that at Le Cell), and my kiddos are likely too old to enjoy the kid games at 'Ohanas. So I made the switch, but couldn't get an ADR any earlier than 4:50.... So it'll just be an earlier dinner for us that evening. (or late afternoon, I should say!)

DDJ did OK with her vocal competition yesterday. She thought she couldv'e done better though. Her teacher (who heard her do her solo) wasn't particularly enthusiastic with her (as he was with some other students) which kind of matched her own view of her performance as just "OK." She gets her flute and vocal scores on Monday; I hope that she isn't dissatisfied with them. I told her how proud I was of her dedication and her courage for following through on these competitions. :thumbsup2

Happy Mother's Day to you! I was so excited to get a post to my pre-trip I had to read on and just finished yours! I looooove the passporter guide books. I like to organize everything so its right up my ally! you will love it!

Your ADRs seem great from the standpoint of someone who has read around although I haven't been to any of them! We have Le Cellier and the Ohana breakfast on our list this time but we aren't much for eating at resorts instead of in the park on the DDP so we are only going to the Poly. We are signed up for the Fantasmic Package with Hollywood and Vine, as a matter of fact. I think Mama Melrose sounds great too but the way I organized our ADRs I didn't want to go to Italian places twice in a row and wanted to do Fantasmic when there were EMH at MGM so we went for H & V instead- we are eating in Italy at World Showcase the night before. Our two favorite CS lunch menus were at Mexico in World Showcase and Pecos Bill in Magic Kingdom.

Also, just to let you know- you guys are going to have so much fun! I am excited that you are going around the same time we are and I don't even know you! lol! the disboards just do that to me! I nanny in the summertime and the kids are 10 (girl) and 12 (boy) and they went to WDW last summer for the first time since they were 4 & 6 and they still talk about it. Your family is going to have such a fantastic time!!!

:thumbsup2

Melissa -- How organized and well-thought through you are! I'm impressed! I don't have a strong sense yet of what day/what parks, or really kept track of what parks have EMH on what days.

I guess that's next! :goodvibes

I know we should do MGM the day (or at least afternoon) that we do Mama Melrose and the FDP. And I know we should do Epcot, probably the whole day, there's so much to see, the day we do Le Cellier.

I know there is advice out there about what days to do what parks, or at least what days to not do certain parks.... I just haven't found it yet.

Anybody want to help me out?! Or point me in the right direction?!

Our last trip started on a very busy week and ended in a barren time at WDW... we came in on January 2nd, by Saturday crowds were long gone! We did not go by any historic trends but we did notice some things. Try and avoid the park that has EMH later in the morning. We went over to MK for morning EMH and by around 10 it was mobbed. We suggest parkhopping around a bit, and as far as meals, we try to see the show at each park in a row so we set up our ADRS to shift around abit for dinner, but we went back for wishes right after a World Showcase dinner with ease, as well. There are park-to-park buses so its easily accessible if you give yourself enough time. One other tip is to grab maps at check in so you can read them on the way over to the parks and decide what you want to go right in and fastpass. Happy Planning! :goodvibes

Hi,

I'm enjoying your pre-trip. I wish I could say I was an expert and offer good advice, but I just won't know how successful it all is until I return at the end of June. I have a fantastic plan, will just see how it all works out. Your ADRs look good from what I've read. As far as planning the week, I think as long as you can make your ADRs you should be able to play the rest by ear.

Sounds like you're on the right track. I'll be back before you go and let you know how it goes.

Hi Mel -- thanks for the tips! I hope to go armed with park maps; that's a good idea about looking at them while we're on the bus so that when we get to the park we know right where we want to go!

Hi Jupers -- thanks for the kind words! :goodvibes I'll look about to see if you have a pre-trip out there, but if not, tell me a little about your "fantastic plan" -- my curiousty is interested!

My current decision is whether to encourage/allow the kids to get into pin trading. I've been reading the pin trading threads and it sounds like it could be a lot of fun, but a little pricey if I'm not careful. I've looked on e-bay and websites for discounted pins and found them; now I just have to make a decision. Both DS and DD say they might be interested; they got more interested when they saw the pictures of pins on the PC.

Anybody do any pin trading at the World?

I just read your post, thanks for the kind words. As for pin trading I ordered two starter lanyards on ebay for less than at Disney.

I wasn't planning on doing it but my brother went last year and said the kids really got into it. If you get a starter set then you can trade those. I'm hoping it won't cost too much more than that. His two kids were 6 and 4 when they went so it sounds like its good for any age.

I did a little pin trading last Jan at our first trip. We got free pins (1 each) for our ressies. There was a voucher in with the package at the time. I had some from Disney DVD sets from a while back and from Disney Movie Club. I was able to trade some ones I didn't like. But I have to say it just made me more interested in souvenir shops and I spent a lot on pins I really wanted after I didn't see them around. I would say I spent a total of $40 on lanyard and pins throughout our trip. This time around, since I have the set of bus pins, and a lot of ones I just liked to hold onto I have decided not to bring the pins, but instead purchase one and only one from our resort. I think it would be much easier for kids not to spend money because obviously they have you to watch them! ;)

Hi Jupers, Hi Mel -- Thanks for sharing your pin experiences. I'm contemplating buying a lot of 25 pins (I think it comes to about $3 each) from a recommended site on the internet to get us going. But you're right -- not inexpensive! I didn't see any "lanyard sets" on e-bay; just pin lots. But I hear I can get a lanyard at the Disney store if we go that way. I might as well just go ahead and do it; I think DS or DD would enjoy it. And if they didn't go for it; I will! I'm always a little hestitant buying things unseen on the internet; I'll get DH to do it. :thumbsup2

To report my Disney Progress for the day: my Passporter and Unofficial Guide came in the mail today, 2 days early. Yippee! Now I'll have reading material for the next several days. :goodvibes Even DH was interested in the books and was leafing through them.

((it is getting kind of silly how I look for one little "Disney thing" to do each day; "Disney Progress" I think of it as! Brings us one day closer to our trip!))

List of the to-do lists:
develop packing list
develop carry on list
the what-to-carry-in-the-park list
buy pins (done)
finish park itinary (done, I think!)
pick out possible CS spots (done)
buy good walking shoes, at least for me and DD; check with DH and DS (done)
hire a neighbor kid to watch the house and pets
lose 5 pounds so I can gain it eating at WDW! :rotfl2: (2.5 down)

What am I missing?! (lots of things, I'm sure!)

I didn't even think of buying that many pins, I guess that's something to look into.

I don't have the link but if you search on this board somewhere I saw the ULTIMATE packing list. It covers carry-on too, and what to do before you leave.

I'm organized but that might be even too much for me. I'm dying to start packing!

Thanks Jupers!

I searched under Ultimate Packing Guide and found it. What a list! I don't have access to a printer today (long story; main computer is in the shop -- it is giving us the dreaded blue screen), so I'll find it again and print it out at work.

It'd take a month to pack using it, it is so comprehensive! Not to mention needing an extra half a suitcase!

Regarding pins: 25 pins is the smallest lot that pincastle sells (that I could see, anyway). And I read enough on this site to be a little shy about buying them on e-bay, not really knowing what I was doing and being afraid that I wouldn't get good quality trading pins. And I think in 8 days, we would probably go through them, especially if both kids were trading. So this weekend, I may just bite the bullet and make that my "disney progress" for the weekend. :goodvibes

Off topic: Tonight is DS's (who is newly 10) birthday party. It is his first sleepover party... We invited 5, thinking not all would be able to come. You guessed it; all 5 will be here! :scared1: :) Well, it'll be high energy in the house tonight! I told DH that he's in charge -- I've monitored DD's sleepovers; he gets to monitor this one! The weather should be nice, so they can be outside for a while. And we have a foosball table; that's always a bit hit. And we have the requisite video games; that'll keep them occupied for a while too. Pizza, cake and ice cream will figure in there somewhere. I hope sleep figures in there somewhere too!

Wish me luck!:rotfl:

OK, more progress. And 63 days to go. :goodvibes

I've made some tentative decisions on CS lunch spots. Can (would?!) anybody care to comment or let me know if they've eaten at any of these?

Pecos Bill and/or El Pirata Y el Perico (
someplace in MGM....
Yakitori House
someplace in MGM...
Cosmic Rays Starlight Cafe
Boulangerie Patisserie
Tusker House
Columbia Harbor House

As you can see, I'm having some trouble with places in MGM... Maybe Studio Catering Company?

Off topic: we all survived the b-day party. (Barely!) DH did a great job and was rewarded with a long nap today, to make up for the significant lack of sleep from last night, I'm afraid!

Ok so... I think I mentioned Pecos Bills before... the DBF loved it! He went there 3 times, I only ate there once because I tried Pinnochio Village Haus (or something like that) and had an ice cream bar one day instead. LoL. That being said I wanted to try El Pirate also this time. Cosmic Rays is also a lot of fun! We ate at the ABC Commissionary in MGM and it was good and fun. We took pics of some "Lost" memoribilia for my sister who loved the show. It was not that crowded either. We were never in Epcot for lunch but I would recommend Japan or Mexico based on their dinner deliciousness! And I think we had lunch at something called Flame Tree BBQ in Animal Kingdom... I think that was the CS place. Anyways, hope that helps! ;)
