Evening.

Looking for feedback on our first ever poptential cruise. I want to surprise my husband with a Disney cruise when we go to New York December 2018 for his 30th birthday.

Looking at just doing a 4 day sailing and just looking for reviews and feedback on other experiences.

Does it make a good first cruise?

Silly question but is it really cold during December?

Anything else I should know before booking?

I think it's pretty cold in New York in December. And, with a cruise only being 4 nights, you're not going to get to particularly warm areas and back in that time.

I don't think DCL has any Dec cruises out of New York.

That's fair enough. Being from the UK we only go to WDW in January and find the weather quite warm.

Is there a particular itinerary which people recommend. I actually don't mind the idea of Canada for our first cruise but want to know if because it's the cheapest, is it still any good?

In December 2018, DCL is sailing out of Port Canaveral, Miami and Galveston - all warmer weather sailings. The NYC sailings are earlier in the fall. Other cool weather sailings include the Alaska sailings out of Vancouver during the summer.

Note also that FL in January and NYC in December are two completely different things. It's still warm down in Florida, but up north, it gets quite cold.

Well, Florida in January is warmer than New York in January.

We did an eastbound TA last year that went up to Canada before heading east. Yes, Canadian cruises are good. They're probably (relatively) cheaper because not as many people want to do those as want warmer itineraries.

ok, I think I may have to rethink this then.

Maybe a carribean cruise may be better but I don't want to totally rule out New York as it's somewhere husband really wants to visit

As someone who's lived in NYC all of his life I could tell you that generally it is cold in December but not frigid. That usually comes in late-January and February. That's when we get biting wind that just takes your breath away. In December the temperature is usually in the mid-30s to low 40s. But it could be warmer. Last year we took an NCL cruise and it was low 50s at the time we sailed away. And a few years back we took an RCCL cruise and had temperatures in the mid-50s. Generally, sailing in December from NYC means that the day that you embark plus the first full day on the ship (the first day at sea) and the last day at sea are rather cold and tough to be on the outer decks.

NYC temperature in December is about the same as Glasgow. It is colder than London by several degrees. Orlando in December is warmer than London during a normal summer.

The distance from NYC to Disneyworld is about the same distance as London to Madrid.

Hmmm, thanks for the replies. Think I may need to rethink it. While he may enjoy it, the idea of being cold on a cruise doesn't appeal
