I'm really just going to repeat what some others have said, but around the Times Square area...
Carmine's -- good Italian food served family-style. We've been three times and, unfortunately, our last trip was a little underwhelming. We had an awful server who absolutely didn't want to be there and made it completely obvious that it was simply a chore for him to serve us. (Add to that, the bathroom was disgusting...mind you...I'm a guy...bathroom cleanliness isn't exactly a top-notch priority [heck, we stand there, zip up, and walk away], but the puddles of urine that I had to maneuver around to simply get to the urinal weren't a lovely sight.) And now that I've left you with that lovely thought... [This hasn't deterred us from Carmine's, mind you. We'll be back and just chalk it up to one bad night. However, it has made us explore other options in the area.]
- Ellen's Stardust Diner -- I had no desire to eat here, but was dragged there on my last trip. Unlike a previous poster who said the servers weren't involved at all, I found it to be quite fun. The food was overpriced for sure, but similar to some Disney restaurants, you're paying for the atmosphere, too, and those servers could really sing.
- Virgil's -- Great bbq.
- Junior's -- This is our go-to place for a quick meal (quick assuming you don't hit the restaurant right before or after the Broadway matinees or evening shows start). Yes, it's a little pricey, but we haven't been disappointed by the sandwiches here. And the cheesecake is pretty darn great, too.
- Trattoria TreColori -- While nothing fancy or overly special, I was very surprised at how moderately priced this Italian place was.
- I will also second the Bubba Gump's mention from above. Yes, it's a chain, but we've been quite pleased the two times we've eaten at Bubba's. Unfortunately, they've taken my favorite meal off the menu (a chipotle sauced shrimp served over rice), but I've managed to craft it fairly accurately at home.
