New York christmas 2013... the plans begin

Finally decided on a hotel in NYC for Christmas I may have booked and cancelled 3 bookings before I decided and booked a non refundable place. I am staying at the distrikt hotel - it has good reviews and seems to have a few extra touches which I am hoping will make Christmas away from Family a little easier.

I need to book some accommodation near JFK for a one night before I fly out to Hawaii but am unsure of where to book, so if anyway has ever done an airport stay would appreciate the feedback

I don't know airport hotels - but la gaurdia is close (10-15 minutes) and the taxi is not expensive

also there is set fee taxi $45 to JFK from midtown. the trip can take 20-40 minutes.
