Hey!

Now that Christmas is nearly here, I am now looking ahead at New Years.

Normally New Years Eve is just apps and snacks. I have to work that day, but can leave a little early. I am always looking for some new ideas though!

Do you do anything special for New Years Day?

We have had nontraditional food for Thanksgiving and will for Christmas, so I told everyone it was going to be a "real" meal for New Year's.
Roast beef
Ham
mashed potatoes and gravy
rolls
corn
green bean casserole
macaroni and cheese
green salad

dessert will be cupcakes and "The Gray Stuff".

DH and I started a new "tradition" a couple of years ago. We go to a local restaurant for lunch and at noon take a selfie and send it to our families wishing them a Happy New Year. party:

Nothing. To me it's just another day. Never liked NYE or the parties. New Year Day is just football. Sometimes we try to get a creative food spread together but nothing is tradition. Now if there is a bowl game we are invested in we might travel to it.

When our kids got older we did a few NYE trips ~ New York City Time Square (amazing bucket list item) even hotel was right there, New Orleans (my favorite) NYE and you mingle with the Bowl folks (actually did 3 Sugar Bowls/NYE in NOLA when we were young twenties), Nashville which we combined with the Bowl game there even though we weren't routing for a team ... then drove direct to Orlando for a Bowl game we were cheering for (DS and I went to MK, rest to bowl game).

I didn't grow up with any of the good luck foods or doing anything special at all, no memories of anything.

Our tradition since we've been married is to have kielbasa, sauerkraut and dumplings cooking on the stove late in the evening New Year's Eve to be ready at midnight. We have a bit at midnight with some champagne, and then eat it for lunch and/or dinner on New Year's Day.

For as long as I can remember, we have eaten pork of some variety, sauerkraut, black eyed peas, potatoes, and dinner rolls for dinner on New Year’s Day. Somewhere during the day we are also supposed to eat prunes and almonds, so those are snack foods. Supposedly these foods are supposed to bring good luck although with the hurricane season we had, I should have eaten more of them. This year the pork will be a barbecued chop and the potatoes will be mashed. Last year the pork was bacon and the potatoes were hash browns, so it was more like a breakfast.

We usually do an appetizer spread for NYE ... shrimp, spinach artichoke dip, veggies, cheese & crackers, etc. NY day varies, but I like to include collards and black eyed peas. Sometime in the last couple of years I found a black eyed pea hummus recipe, and that was pretty good ... will likely do that again.

If weather isn't an issue we usually go out for an early dinner at a local Diner or Italian restaurant. Otherwise it is seafood raviolis at home..

NYE date night. First time ever since 1999. We are having an early dinner at a seafood restaurant.

New Year’s Day. Slow cooker Texas Chili & corn bread.

My MIL always made pork baked in kraut, seasoned with onion, caraway seeds, brown sugar, and garlic, with mashed potatoes. I guess it's supposed to be good luck to eat pork on NYDay? Don't know about that, but it was a delicious dish that I haven't been able to replicate. I keep trying, though! (I miss her so much :sad1:)

Have you tried this recipe? https://intentionalhospitality.com/new-years-eve-pork-and-sauerkraut-recipe/
It's very similar to the one DH' greandmother used, and has all your ingredients except the garlic.

We usually do cheese fondue with a bunch of dippers on NY Eve (brown and crusty bread, ham, apples, soft pretzel bites, tater tots, tortilla chips etc. The assortment just depends on what we are in the mood for when we hit the grocery store. Sometimes we do chocolate caramel fondue on NY day.

I'm so glad I read this as I had no idea but I think I have one now. NYE my daughter and I are going to an invited buffet with Champaine at the casino so what I'm going to do is get two of the large Chinese meals from Panda to take home for the 1st. First time ever I will be watching the Peach Bowl (or any bowl). There is a star player for AZ from my little high school.

We always do finger foods on NYE. We will probably hit up Costco later today, but a few things I expect to be on the menu...

- Crab Rangoon Dip - I've never made it before, but it looked like something everyone would like.
- Smoked Salmon - Not sure if we'll get some kind of toast points or bagel type fixings to go with it.
- Latkes - Last night was latke night and with Chanukah coinciding with New Year's, we'll surely have some.

We're going out for a Thai lunch on New Year's Eve.

New Year's Day it will be our tradition of black eye peas with hot sausage and cabbage.
