Hi Walking Buddies!

Ok, for the one or two of you that aren't on the other threads where I post (with apologies for those of you seeing this the 2nd or 3rd time)...

Forgive me as I am self-indulgent for a moment ...today is our 15th wedding anniversary, and dh gave me a beautiful eternity band! It is perfect for me, just like dh! He really surprised me, because we weren't going to do anything big this year as we are postponing a celebratory trip. He said did want to do something memorable because it is a big anniversary. This meant so much to me...:lovestruc I really am a Belle girl, but I do have my Ariel moments, and I like shiny things from time to time :goodvibes

Dave -- You are one of our favorite princes! You always have a cheery comment for us -- actually we should probably call you Prince Charming! ;)

Connie & Jeanne -- Love the photos! Thanks for sharing with us! :dance3:

Denise -- Wow! That sounds like quite a program. I think I'm a little :scared1: of the "Ab Ripper" though! :lmao:

Nancy -- I don't know if you and Jeanne should be allowed out anymore without supervision -- but then where's the fun in that?! :yay:

Everybody have a great walkin' night!
Maria :cloud9:

wow - I have an eternity band too, got it for our 15th also!! Way to go and sounds like he's a KEEPER!! For our 30th he bought me a new larger diamond, that was a real surprise - start dropping hints now so he can start saving! This year is 34 and it promises to be a quiet one -next year depends on the economy!

Nancy and Jeanne, I think I'll be the supervisor come Marathon weekend and see how much trouble we can get in:rolleyes1 . Unfortunately I can only have 1 drink as my stomach is not up to more with all the meds I have taken over the years for my neck so I'm a cheap date but a fun one besides!

Off to PT tonight then maybe a walk, it's been a crazy week at work and I'm wiped!

Maria--- Happy 15th Anniversary. What a wonderful gift from your DH.

Today is our 38th Anniversary also which was the reason for the celebration at V&A over Minnie weekend. Jeanne and John will be having their 34th on 5/11. So we ate, drank and celebrated with our friends. Not quite the same as a ring, but still PRICELESS.

Denise---You are welcome to be our supervisior as long as you let us get into a little bit of trouble.

Wendy--- Great trip report and pictures.

Jeanne-- I didn't realize that Terry was taping us. Now my name will be crossed off the Wedding guest list once he shares that with his family. :rotfl2:

Dave-- I asked about the time limit for the ToT while at the Expo. The man never did give me a direct answer, other than it is a fun event and not really competetive and people would have time to finish the race. Pace is still at 16 minute mile. I will be signing up at some point, but DH would really like to do it and he would not be happy if he was sweep or even detoured.

Got to get ready to go home.

Nancy

Nancy -- I am honored to share your anniversary, and 38 years is truly an accomplishment! I think you and Jeanne found a wonderful way to celebrate! Happy Anniversary!party:

I thought June was a big wedding month, but I guess plenty of us DISers thought May would be lovely!

Jeanne -- Celebrating Mother's Day and your anniversary on the same day, I'm sure will be extra special! Just in case I'm not online much this weekend -- Happy Anniversary!

Denise -- Yes, a bigger diamond would never occur to dh. Maybe I'll start mentioning it after we hit 20...:goodvibes

Don't worry about the wedding....i'm sure we can hide you among the 400+ Greeks!

I agree that our anniversary celebration was "PRICELESS"!

I think Norm will be absolutely OK at TofT. Just look at the Minnie....that was a 15 minute pace and I don't think anyone really got swept. Some people got a little break, but they seemed to hold the course open for a good 20 minutes more than they should have. I believe they will keep TofT open for 2.5 hours again this year, but don't want to publicize it because they might end up with too many people that can barely make the 2.5 hour requirement and then they WILL have to sweep people.

Thanks, Maria, but actually BOTH Mother's Day AND our anniversary are going to take a back seat this year. You see, my youngest child actually graduates from UNC-Chapel Hill on Sunday also! Now that's a reason to celebrate!

Hey Nancy: I can understand your DH not wanting to get swept or detoured at the ToT. I was one of those who were detoured (given a break) at the Minnie 15K last weekend. Although I appreciate not getting swept, I didn't like getting the short-cut because now I have no idea of my real time. I finished 2:19+ (chip time), but don't know the miles because of the detour! I already signed up for the ToT and am glad about the 16 minute/mile pace. Although, I cannot yet walk that fast! I need to figure out how to racewalk so I can get faster (I'm very short and have trouble keeping up pace). In any case, I'll take a detour over getting swept any day. Hope to see you at the ToT. :cool1:

Ok, I am brain dead today. DH had to remind me that it is our 37th anniversary. Plus I went to the CVS to purchase an anniversary card (yes it is last minute bu that is the story of my life) and they had moved the card section. I walked around and around the card area and couldn't find any anniversary cards so I had to ask the lady why there were no cards. Of course she walked right over and showed them to me. They were even in there own seperate section. Dah.

I have plenty of time to register DH for the ToT. Now that it is nice we will start to go to the rail trail and maybe he can increase his time to the 16/min. I will be doing it. If nothing else, he can stay at BWV with Robert and Linda and start the party.

Nancy

Hey to all you walking wonders!!

I did a practice racewalk 5k after work today. I did it in 43min that about a 13:52 pace. Pretty good. I had to try and not look at my Garmin because for Saturday's FL state racewalking thingy I'm doing you can't wear any sort of timing device. Also you have to wear an outfit that shows your knees - ugh! I hate my knees, but I guess that's the rules and I have to follow them. I know some of you are thinking I'm crazy for doing back to back events (Minnie 15k and this 5K on Sat) well, I guess I kinda am. I'm the one who did 3 Half Marathons in a 7 week span. Anyway, I am in the Open division and will be interested how I stack up to other racewalkers. I just hope not the be the last one. The joint in my big toe on my right foot (the one I had surgery on about 2 1/5 years ago has been hurting a bit since the Minnie 15K) I think I might do some pool work tomorrow and ice the joint.

Take care all and have a good evening.

Morning everyone.

Good luck Tracy with your Racewalk this weekend.

I am doing the Race for the Cure on Sunday. Though it is a charity event it is still a race including bibs. I didn't expert that. So I was going to walk with DH, but more than likely that isn't going to happen. Will be cheering him on at the end. No WISH shirt this weekend as I will be proudly wearing my Pink Survivor Shirt.

Nancy

Hi Jeanne:flower3:

Tracy, good luck in your race. For what it's worth when I Race I spend at least a half hour warming up with brisk walking for about 10 min then racewalking technique for about 5 min brisk then a few walking sprints. Then some more brisk regular walking. When the race starts I'm ready to go full throttle right from the start. Then the challange is to hold pace for the entire race. Our races here are on the hills so I attack the hills and concentrate on holding perfect technique on the down hills where it's harder to not break into a run.

Everyone have a super day and an awesome weekend.

Nancy: good luck with the race on Sunday! (Although I expect it won't be nearly as much fun as the Minnie was for us!)

Nancy you and Norm have a wonderfull race. The pink survivor shirt is a must for that kind of race.

I am also doing a walk on Sunday for the Y-Me National Breast Cancer Organization's Walk/run to Empower. I Believe it is 3 miles and will be down in Miami. I will also be wearing a pink shirt of some sort for the group that did fundraising with , but I might wear my limeade WISH visor.

Hey Tracy. You're gonna have to teach me racewalking. Maybe that's what I need in order to increase my speed. I've been reading up on it, but it seems kind of difficult to get everything going right. I was going to try a little last night, but after 20 minutes of regular walking I couldn't stand those shin splints. Not sure if I'm getting them because I did too much too soon (just started training for the Minnie 15K 5 weeks ahead of time) or if it's my new Brooks running shoes, which I started wearing at the SAME time I had started training. I didn't get "fit" for my shoes (don't even know of any running stores around here) - just ordered them online, so maybe it's my shoes???

I'm sure Panda can attest to shin splints. They are pretty much the first thing you start to notice when you do ALOT of faster walking. You will have awsome shins when you get into it. There are some shins strengthening things you can do that are on the website that Panda recommended early on on this thread. The one is where you walk with your toes up and on your heels in very small strides. Remember to stretch your shins when you are done walking also!!.
I would first concentrate on the racewalker "foot roll" - shins definately come into play here. The roll is very important!! Concentrate on that for a while and don't think about how fast you are going at the beginning.
Maybe Panda could add his perspective on this.

Good luck to you Debbie, just alittle patience and you will learn it and is becomes second nature. I am still trying to work on arm swing and trying not to have hand to close to one another in the front (it wastes energy) especially when I get tired.

Racewalking uses totally different muscles than running. There are also "Rules" for racewalking and you can be disqualified during a race if you go outside the rules.

Keep it up Debbie. Do research and learn all you can, but I do suggest you kinda take one new thing at a time.

Debbie and Tracy and everyone else. We are looking at starting a mentoring section on the WISH board where we would have step by step for someone wanting to progress in a varity of activities including racewalking. Expect this within a month. The planning and discussion is going on now.

Tracy if your are interested we can work together on that since it is ideal to have a male and female mentor on each of the activities. I can't speak from experience about things like sports bras or skirts. Once the details are worked out I'll contact you so we can plan our racewalking section.

Debbie, it's very important to warm up well with normal brisk walking before you go into racewalking technique. I know when I haven't warmed up properly if my shins hurt soon into a race. One day last year it was close to a 100 degrees and high humidity so I didn't warm up much before a 5K walk race, I paid for it with painfull shins for the first mile till they warmed good. It's bad enouth having a race in that kind of heat and lots of hills without having shin pain along with it.

Doing a good stretching routine and Dave McGovern's recommended dynamic stretches have helped a lot.
