New Walker's Sharing Ideas

I bought new running shoes (I'm a walker). I had to order them online because I have such a fat shoes. They are Brooks Adrenaline GTS 8's. My width is 2E!! I'm wearing them right now and they feel so comfortable (bought them in 1/2 size bigger than my normal size as recommended). But, it's POURING rain here in SW Florida. Hope it clears later. I need to do my training! I need to get my speed up. I think I may need to learn karate real quick so that if they try to "sweep" me, I can give them a Hi-Ya (karate chop)!!!

I hope on not stepping on toes here but this is what I sent yesterday to a fellow newbie walker. Following my words is the webpage that I read often for inspiration.

I think I re-read it now and then throughout my training process to reinforce a few things.

Also, the mental thing he mentions at 33% of the ability to finish the race. Honestly I believe it is much higher than that. I remember doing 6 miles and thinking - now that was no big deal. BUT I had never done more than that. I had always done the 6 and managed to decrease the time it took me in addition to feeling less tired each time I did it.

During the 1/2 I fell in the first mile and hurt my hand, I was not worried about my hand, I was ticked, get up brush off - keep going. I always have trouble between mile 2 and 3, during the race was no exception, the sun was coming up at that time and I was hot. I was discouraged, what was wrong with me?? again I remembered my training, it was my troubled time not me! Put it down, move on!

Mile 8, my times are good, I won't be swept, OMG, I have never gone this far.... this is where the mental thing kicked in. In my mind I said OH WELL, you've made it this far and your OK. Mile 10 I CAN'T BE SWEPT you can relax, screw that, I want a good time to cross that finish line!

Ya, I'd say it's more like 50-50 in the attitude dept.and training dept.

Train with the clothes you'll wear the day of the race, try a lot of different things.

#1 - socks & sneakers
#2 - Undergarments

Food, fuel, drinks, hats proper shirts and believe it or not - watch your nipples!

On that note, I'll end.

Happy Trails

Hi Walking Buddies!

I just found out I have to punt on my walk tonight, so I'm a little bummed. On the bright side, I guess this will give me more energy for Friday's workout

Denise -- As always you have sage advice. :yoda:

Dave -- I hope you are able to have an awesome workout tomorrow, I know you are itching to move!:cool1:

Debbie -- I spent an entire year worrying about being swept, I am very out of shape and not the fastest walker at all, and I made it! You can, too! The day of your race, you will amaze yourself. :wizard:

Kim -- We have to skip ToT, but we will definitely be at Marathon weekend. I'm going to make reservations this weekend. I'm dithering between CSR and POR where we were last year. Any thoughts?! :surfweb:

Dsnyfan -- I'm a Kristy fan, too! She and Brian Boitano will always hold a special place in my heart

Sam, Jeanne, Connie, Ducky, Bill -- :jumping3: Are you walkin' on sunshine?

Everyone have a great Walkin' Day!
Maria :disrocks:

Thanks to everyone for being so encouraging. WDW4us: you mentioned "undergarments." Is there a particular type of material I should look for in underwear (panties)?? Is all cotton bad? I know it is for socks. I bought special running socks. Are there special running underwear too?? If so, where would I buy them? Maybe at a big sporting goods store? I'm doing well in my training and I'm definitely not going to give up. I can hardly wait for the big day (Minnie 15K).

I can't tell you enough to get a good bra. Believe it or not my favorite one comes from Target.

Socks, I bought some danskin, ascis and some others. I tried them out on a trip to Disney in November to make sure walking alot would not give me blisters. I have a real issue with the bottoms of my feet becoming hot then painful especially if I wear flats. These socks were great.

Panties, I tried a lot during my training and set aside my favorites. Pants, I wore capris that I bought at Sams club because I didn't want chub rub on my thighs and they were great. The one issue I had was the waterbelt I wore during the race. It gave me a welt on my back that still looks like a one eye staring at you but that's a small price to pay. I will practice with it this year to see if it's any better. If not, will try for plan B, a camelback.

Truly, you have a lot of time to try your clothes during your training. I wanted to look real cute the day of the race but I also wanted to finish so I wore what worked for me and in the end I didn't care what I looked like, I made it!

Look for something like microfiber or something with "dry" in the name, I really like "moving comfort", but I have worn some microfiber panties that I got at Wal Mart. Cotton will get wet and stay wet and therefore be uncomfortable.

I just wear the shorts with a brief liner.

Good morning walkers, did everyone but me get to sleep in today?

We finally have a day without rain scheduled, the next few days should be dry and warm. Maybe I can get outside and get some real training going.

Have a great weekend y'all.

Hi!

Dave -- I have a question I know you can answer. I don't have any big mileage events coming up until the Half in January. So, my LW approach has been to just add a quarter mile each week -- this week was 5.250, next week will be 5.500. Is there a point where I shouldn't just keep doing that? I was thinking at 10 miles? I know this isn't a real training plan, and I will follow MfM starting in October (although by then I should be well above the LW numbers they recommend for most of the training schedule.

Anyway, is there a reason not to do this? I really don't want to set myself up for injury or failure...

Thanks for any and all advice!

Maria the buildup you are talking about sounds good. Erica and I try to stay in half marathon shape all the time. We do that by having a 10 miler as our regular weelky LSD, then we just have to do a few months of progressively building up the weekly lSD, usually one mile a week with every third week cutting back to the 10 mile walk as the LSD.

The important thing besides building up is to keep making your other walks different.

One or two walks do a slow easy first mile, then speed up till you are still able to handle the pace but you are feeling it and go 2 miles then do an easy mile to recover.

Do one walk where you warn up good with an easy first mile, then do bursts of as fast as you can go for about the distance between telephone poles and then slow again for the same distance. Keep doing this for a mile and then do an easy mile to cool down and recover.

Find a hilly course to walk on. Start with a few hills then as you get stronger add more of just do loops on them.

These are the kind of workouts I do.

Hope that helps princess.

Hi Panda I'm back...sorry you got worried.:sad2:
I was visiting Mickey Mouse but kept up my training for the Minnie 15K. (along with walking at the parks!!)
Still doing well, I had an arch issue for a few days, but it passed.

Debbie: I like a pair of underwear made by Isis, they are microfiber and I find them better than cotton. Like someone else said cotton just get very wet and will cause more of a chaffing issue. I like wearing capri length compression type pants that are moisture wicking.

I was getting a rubbing or chaffing from a fanny pack I had one time, so I just have to make sure it doesn't bounce too much. Also put alot of Vasaline in the area on race day or LW and that helps to keep it from chaffing.

Hope all is well with the other walkers!!

Hi Tracy, I sure wish I was going to be able to do the Minnie trip, maybe next year we will make a third trip. We like going for ToT and the Marathon in January.

I'm doing well also, getting ready to ramp up my training now that the forcast is for some warm dry weather. Tomorrow will be 3 hours of workout and tues I'll start doing the speed intervals.

Have a great evening y'all.

Good morning my fellow walkers, wow it is so nice to get out for regular walks our weather has turned nice Ijust hope it is for good. We finally had shorts on this weekend:cool1: :cool1:

Looks like we are definatley in for ToT week....2 days confirmed, once the other 5 are we are in for sure until then:confused3 we have to wait and see.

Now sure about Jan we have been eyeing a Alaskan Cruise for a few years now and are thinking about May 2009 which then Jan 09 will definatley not be in the budget but that is all up in the air right now. Just looking forward to ToT and F&W!!!!!!

Have a great day all

Kim

Had a nice 6 miler with sister, son and niece. Cold when we started, only 35 with breeze at 8 a.m. As we completed our first 4 mile loop past the car, we were able to ditch the top layers into the car and be very comfy for our last 2 miles.

Later on in the day, I was able to enjoy our sunroom in shirt sleeves and even do some errands with the car windows down :cool1:

I have been starving for sunshine and yesterday was a feast. :thumbsup2

Yay, Kim......that's great news about TofT! Are you waitlisted for Boardwalk? My reservation for Wednesday night in a standard studio just came through last week so I now have my all 4 nights at BW. Got my fingers crossed for you. Don't want to miss Dave and Robert's party!

Jeanne--- What a horrible race experience that was. I feel bad for anyone that it was their 1st race, it would make you not want to do another. Congratulations to you and John for your good times. I had a great time in NYC and loved Jersey Boys, I would even pay to see it again. Also glad that you were able to get the other room at BWV. I should check if a Thursday night opened up.

Kim---Now we must meet at ToT weekend.

Haven't been posting much as I seem to be busy with alot of things going on.

Nancy

Nancy: so glad you liked Jersey Boys....I knew you would! Did you do anything else fun in the city?

That race was the very first one for Jason's GF. I felt really sorry for her. She said her stomach was acting up (probably more nerves than anything else) and she kept looking for a bathroom. She did the entire race together with Jason and her Dad. It must have been such a disappointment to not get a medal. I saw a few people with them and they were pretty crappy, but that's not the point. They won't even email us when they are ready....it's our responsibility to check the website and then go pick them up. Only out-of-towners who request it will get them mailed. I'd like to know what they did with the $45 (or more) thay charged everyone because it certainly didn't go to food or entertainment.

Our bus got there around 9am and was dropped off at 7th and 50th. So we ate breakfast and then walked down to the Empire State Building. I went with a friend from work so it had been years since we had both been to NYC. I'm glad we made it the first thing we did as the line was huge when we came out. On our walk back we stopped at few place to pick up some things but limited any shopping to small bags since we had to carry them all day. I didn't make it to the World of Disney. I really liked the M&M store and found it amusing that it was right across the street from the Hershey store. We ate dinner at a really good Italian place, made a stop back at the M&M place to make a few purchases before we got on the bus. The weather cooperated and we had no rain. It was a fun day.

What a bummer of a race for Jason's GF.

Nancy
